A Sequel 36 Years in the Making

After 36 years, we have a first look at Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Entertainment Weekly just released exclusive images from the new film. Read on to check them out.

The original 1988 film followed the deceased Maitland couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), who enlist a demon known as Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to get rid of the current (living) residents of their home, the Deetz family. Things, of course, don’t exactly go according to plan. Director Tim Burton told Entertainment Weekly that the sequel begins with a death in the family. Apparently, they tossed around many ideas for the sequel but ultimately settled on the story of three generations of Deetz women.

The sequel sees Keaton reprising his role as the titular demon. Winona Ryder returns to the role of Lydia Deetz, along with Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Burton is also back as director, with his Wednesday collaborators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar working on the script.

New Cast

The new main cast includes Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter; Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife; Burn GormanJustin Theroux and Willem Dafoe. Not much is known about the new cast members’ roles, although Dafoe did disclose his role as an action star who died and became a police officer in the Afterlife. I’m especially excited about Theroux’s involvement, and I love whatever vibe he has going on in one of the first-look images.

Warner Bros. released two images that prove the style and tone will be similar to the original film. The first shows Keaton in his familiar striped getup, flashing his iconic spooky smile. The second image features O’Hara as Delia, Ortega as Astrid, Ryder as Lydia and Theroux as Rory. All four are wearing black and looking somber in front of a funeral hearse.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits theaters on September 6, 2024. Until then, check out EW‘s first look, then let us know what you think below.
