Two weeks ago on Supernatural, Sam, Dean, Jody and Mary helped a group of hunters take down a particularly vindictive demon while also honoring the life of a fellow hunter. It was a great episode that was reminiscent of much earlier seasons. It looks like the Winchesters are getting back to basics.

In all of the fun of saving people and hunting things, we can’t forget that Lucifer is still out there, with Cass and Crowley on his trail.

Where does that trail lead? Let’s find out!

Spoilers below!

We start off this episode with a couple of clueless guys, Gordy (Jeff Evans Todd) and Adam (John Connolly) doing a very amateurish Lucifer summoning. Gordy sees this as one big joke but his laughter is quickly silence when Lucifer (Rick Springfield) appears. It seems the spell Rowena casted on him did a number on his vessel and his trip to the bottom of the ocean didn’t help. While as the two guys believe their summoning worked, that is not the case. In their possession is a fossilized feather from Lucifer’s wings. It’s just enough to restore Lucifer’s vessel back to what it was before. Before he kills them both, he learns something interesting about his vessel: he’s “kinda famous.”

Back at the bunker, Dean is playing a game of “Word with Friends” with his mom while Sam has been busy researching the British Men of Letters and other hunter things. In the middle of their conversation Cass gives Dean a call. He’s still on the road with Crowley in search of Lucifer. Fortunately Sam gets a concert alert about Vince Vincente. He’s going to be performing in Los Angeles in the near future. What? The Winchesters are going to L.A.? CRAZY!

At a recording studio in L.A., Crowley pays a friend, Russell (Kadeem Hardison), a visit. Russell has lined up some people ripe for soul selling, but Crowley is only there to get information about Vince Vincente. Crowley believes that Vince has been using his persuasive abilities to stage his comeback and Russell admits that Vince is a different person.

Dean and Sam are 450 miles outside of L.A. It has been many seasons since they were last there. Dean rants a bit about the people in L.A. (it’s a little accurate) but Sam is not listening. Sam claims he is listening to a podcast about the Protestant Reformation, but Dean doesn’t believe him and unplugs his headphones revealing a pretty rocking tune. Dean is appalled that Sam is listening to hair rock.

In L.A., Lucifer is getting the lowdown on how popular his band, Ladyheart, has become on social media. His bandmate Tommy (Woody Jefferies) comes in and wants to start recording, but Lucifer has no intentions of doing that. He has found a new way to gain devoted followers.

At Death Siren studios, Cass meets up with Sam and Dean. Crowley shows up seconds later confirming that Vince Vincente is still Lucifer’s vessel. Crowley also happens to have the key to get into Vince’s room. In the room, they find some books about famous rockers, and more importantly, a tooth that looks like it’s been pulled out by the root. Whose tooth? Well we’re about to find out.

Lucifer is chatting it up with Roseleen (Crystal Allen), a groupie. She’s covering up her face, and we soon know why. That tooth belongs to her. Lucifer absolutely relishes the fact that she is so devoted to him.  She tells him a heartfelt story about how much she loves him and his band, but Lucifer sees this as an opportunity for her to show him just how far she will go to show her devotion. Handing her a knife, he gets her to cut herself. Oh man, does Lucifer love it when people do crazy things for him.

At the hospital, Dean, Sam, Cass, and Crowley get the lowdown on what Roseleen did to herself. In her show of completely and utter love of Vince Vincente, she carved his name into her chest. Yikes. Leaving Cass in charge of Crowley, Sam and Dean go to talk to Roseleen. She is so far gone that she still defends Lucifer even when Dean calls him out.

In Lucifer’s apartment, his manager (Sandy Sidhu) is giving him the update on his big concert. He makes one thing very clear to her: he wants new fans at the concert. She sees the pool of blood where Roseleen maimed herself, and while she looks visible disturbed, it doesn’t stop her from adhering to his wishes.

Back at the hospital, Sam, Dean, Cass and Crowley come up with a plan to confront Lucifer at his concert.  While they don’t know where the concert is or what Lucifer is planning on doing with all those people, they do know that they have to stop him so they go after Lucifer’s team.

Crowley pays Russell another visit in order to get some information as to where Ladyheart will be performing. Russel keeps his mouth shut, but Crowley isn’t having it. Cass questions Tommy about the location of the concert. Tommy is reluctant to say anything bad about Vince, but it looks like Cass is going to have to be persuasive. At a coffee shop, Sam and Dean are talking to Lucifer’s manager while under the guise of being part of a band. She is unimpressed and decides to bail. Sam and Dean come clean with her and ask her about the location of Ladyheart’s concert.

One of these people is bound to crack. Crowley puts the fear into Russell, but it’s ineffective. Cass puts pressure on Tommy, but he’s not going to give Cass the information he needs. Lucifer’s manager, while she knows that Vince has changed, she refuses to tell Dean and Sam where the concert is.

Fresh from their failures to turn anyone on Lucifer’s team, the team has hit a brick wall. Despite this setback it looks like there might be one option left to them.

Team Lucifer arrives at a small, quaint little concert venue where Ladyheart will have their comeback performance. Tommy is upset that they don’t have any new music to sell, which causes Russell to lay in on Lucifer. In his anger Russell makes some pretty big mistake and says the one thing that you should never say to Lucifer, “I own you.” Lucifer makes Russell an example and compels him to stab himself in the neck with a pen. The manager and Tommy recoil in terror, and Lucifer steps out of his stretch SUV, his point being made. As he walks to his doting fans his manager quits and Tommy begins to strongly reconsider his decisions.

As the venue gets ready to opens its doors, Tommy texts Cass the location of the concert.  Once Team Hunter arrives at the theater, they come up with a plan. Dean will place the Enochian handcuffs on Lucifer, but he needs to be distracted long enough for them to put them on him. Cass volunteers, even though everyone knows he won’t last very long going one on one with Lucifer. Still, they have no choice.

The band members of Ladyheart are celebrating the huge crowd that has shown up to their concert. Lucifer enters the greenroom and quickly kills two of his members, sparing Tommy (for a moment).  He has decided to go solo, but before he can kill Tommy, Cass intervenes. Lucifer tosses Cass aside just as Crowley shows up to help with the fight. Sam and Dean make their way through the crowd, but before Sam can pull a fire alarm, the concert starts.

Crowley tries to convince Lucifer to leave the crowd alone since they will never be faithful to Lucifer in the way that he wants. Lucifer concedes that fact but as Vince Vincente he thinks he can be greater than the name Lucifer or even God himself. Tommy tries to escape, but unfortunately Lucifer kills him quickly. Throughout the fight, Lucifer admits his need for love and acceptance, partially blaming his “childhood.” Cass tries to bring the fight to him, but Lucifer breaks him down.  “I know what a weak, duty-bound, pleasureless dullard you are,” Lucifer says as he knocks Cass around.  With Cass incapacitated, Lucifer picks up a guitar and starts beating Crowley with it. At this point Cass and Crowley should have given Sam and Dean enough time distraction to get the people out of the venue.  I mean, how much of a beating can Team CC take?

Sam looks at the fire alarm, while Dean tries to get people out of the club. His distraction gives Sam enough time to pull the arm. Unfortunately not a single person cares about a fire alarm. Lucifer finishes beating Crowley with the guitar when he hears the alarm. Leaving the battered and bruised Crowley and Cass, he makes his way to the stage.

With Lucifer is on the stage, Sam and Dean have to resort to pretty desperate measures. Pulling out his gun, Dean fires off a shot, which sends the crowd into a panic. As the people run out the door, Lucifer uses his power to attempt to shut it, but Sam is able to brace the door long enough for the last of the people to get out. The doors slam on Sam, trapping him and Dean in.

Right when you think Lucifer is about to kill Sam, Cass comes back with his signature “Hey Assbutt” and clobbers Lucifer with a guitar. It’s the only shot he’s able to get in. Dean uses this time as an opportunity to get one Enochian handcuff on Lucifer. The cuff does nothing as Lucifer burns the cuff off. Dean asks Lucifer why he’s doing what he’s doing and Sam reminds Lucifer that he forgave God. Lucifer is not hearing any of it. He was abandoned once again when God left with Amara. So his plan is to continue to go after God’s creations because to him, everything is meaningless now.

As Lucifer rants, his vessel starts to slowly burn up.  It isn’t long before Lucifer abandons his useless vessel. Where is he heading to now? Who knows!

supernatural-s1207i

In the end, Lucifer escapes, Vince Vincente is dead and Team Hunter is disheartened. Even though they were able to save a lot of people, they didn’t save everyone. Sam points out that Lucifer is now without a motive, and that he’s running loose with no goal and no plan (which makes him very, VERY dangerous).  As Sam puts it, “we’re not winning, we’re just losing slow.”

They know that Lucifer is planning something big, and Dean is confident that they will stop him. But how many more loses will they have to take before they get a win?

Supernatural is on Thursdays at 9pm PST on The CW.

The Thoughts So Far:

  • I kind of love the fact that Dean’s “Words with friends” name is 67impala327 (I wonder what 327 means) and Mary’s name is mothermary1983.
  • I wish Hootie and the Blowfish would make a comeback. But I guess Darius is happy with that whole country thing. Sigh.
  • “Land of gridlock, Botox, overtaxing, underachieving, smell of sweaty desperation. I mean, you can’t breathe. The beaches are toxic. You got dudes in skinny jeans wearing sunglasses inside. Oh. Image-obsessed narcissists.” That’s only North Hollywood, Dean.
  • I honestly would watch a spinoff of just Cass and Crowley. Have I said that before? Yes? Well, I’ll keep saying it until I get my Cass/Crowley team up show. I absolutely LOVE those two together.
  • Crowley “Well…together again.” Cass “Yay.” Perfect. So perfect.
  • YAAAAS “ASSBUTT” – Aww I love it.
  • I really enjoyed Rick Springfield in this role. He has a very sympathetic face and during his explanation of what God did to him, I really felt sorry for him. Yeah Lucifer is a bad guy, but I can see where the hate and anger comes from.
