There’s a data relay box on the International Space Station that has failed, and NASA astronauts have been given the go-ahead to walk out into the void to replace it.  There is good news and good news around this announcement.  The good news is that the crew members on the ISS are in no danger as a result of this failure.  And, the other good news is that you can watch the space walk LIVE!

Commander Peggy Whitson and Flight Engineer Jack Fischer will be making the 201st walk in support of the ISS.  It will be Whitson’s 10th walk into space, and Fischer’s 2nd.  The box is “one of two fully redundant systems housed in the truss that control the functionality of radiators, solar arrays, cooling loops and other station hardware.” according to blogs.nasa.gov.  The other box is totally unaffected and working well.

In fact, they’ve added a task to the walk.  Fischer will “install a pair of wireless communications antennas on the Destiny Lab while Whitson replaces the failed data relay box.”  That installation was planned for May 12th and didn’t happen.

You can watch coverage on NASA TV on Tuesday, May 23 starting at 6:30am EDT (that’s 3:30am for us on the west coast).  The actual walk is scheduled to start at 8am (5am).
