We just can’t seem to get enough of War of the Worlds! Announced today by Deadline, Canal+ and Fox are working on a remake of the popular H.G. Wells‘ story. This series is not to be confused with the BBC adaptation coming out later this year. The new remake has just announced its cast and it’s filled with a few familiar faces.

Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary, Vikings) and Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey) are set to lead the ensemble cast. The Urban Myth Film’s TV series will also star Léa Drucker, Natasha Little, Daisy Edgar Jones, Stéphane Caillard, Adel Bencherif, and Guillaume Gouix. More casting is underway but this is the main cast!

So what sets this remake apart, outside of the cast? Well according to the report, we know that it will be set in contemporary Europe and will follow “the pockets of humanity left on earth following an apocalyptic extra-terrestrial strike”. Hopefully the modern day scenery will lend itself to a scarier telling of the story. The series is due to debut later this year on Canal+ in France, and on Fox. It’s strange that there’s two remakes happening at once. But we’ll have to see how writer and creator Howard Overman does with the material.
