Our Flag Means Death 

Bad news, crew. After weeks of campaigning for a third season, Our Flag Means Death is officially canceled. Creator David Jenkins confirmed the news on Instagram. Keep reading to learn more.

Our Flag Means Death follows the fictionalized relationship between real-life historical pirates Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), aka Ed. After leaving his comfortable life as a gentleman to become a pirate, Stede struggles to earn his crew’s respect as he learns the ropes. Eventually, he crosses paths with the infamous Blackbeard. The two find friendship — and more — together on the high seas.

The show premiered on Max in March 2022. It was an instant hit, spending almost 10 weeks at the top of the streaming charts. The online response to Our Flag Means Death was enormous. While Max announced in January that they wouldn’t be airing season 3 of the hit show, fans didn’t take no for an answer. They launched campaigns to save Our Flag Means Death, even fundraising for billboards in Times Square. 

David Jenkins’ Statement 

Apparently, however, season 3 just wasn’t meant to be. Jenkins posted on Instagram, “After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc, it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.” He also had kind words for the fans, stating:

“You are lovely and earnest. Those kinds of things feel in short supply at times. But they aren’t. A love like ours can’t disappear in an instant. When we see each other off in mystic, say hello. We won’t say goodbye because we’re not leaving. We’re just taking a breather until next time we can share something together.”
