Pixar announced this Thursday evening during Disney Investor Day that a Buzz Lightyear origin story is in the works, with Captain America himself, Chris Evans, taking on the lead role.

According to the official Toy Story Twitter announcement,  Lightyear will be Buzz’s definitive origin story. As Toy Story fans are well aware, the Buzz Lightyear toy was based on a massive space franchise with Buzz as the lead. The Buzz we know was a toy based on the mega-star main character.

This movie will cover the real Buzz’s early days as a young test pilot, long before he becomes a Space Ranger and the action figure kids everywhere know and love. Chris Evans reacted to the news going public with a tweet stating, “I don’t even have the words.” He followed up a little while later with: “And just to be clear, this isn’t Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on.”

This will be the first time a Toy Story character gets their own movie spinoff, although several tv shows and series do already exist featuring the characters. Buzz himself even starred in a short-lived series called Buzz Lightyear of Star Command back in 2000. Hopefully, some of his Star Command classmates will make an appearance in the upcoming film.

Lightyear is set to hit theaters on June 17, 2022.
