It really is the “Dawn” of a new age on The Gifted. Polaris (Emma Dumont) gave birth last week to a baby girl she named Dawn. The birth sparked a blackout in Washington D. C. and almost led Marcos (Sean Teale) to Polaris’ side. Marcos and Caitlin (Amy Acker) are desperate to find Polaris and Andy (Percy Haynes White). But do Polaris and Andy want to be found? And Reed’s (Stephen Moyer) dormant mutant powers are starting to emerge. What does this mean for the MU?
Sometime after 7/15, John (Blair Redford) was fighting in bars for money. A woman named Evangeline (Erinn Ruth) approaches him with a proposition. She says she works with the X-Men and asks him to run the Mutant Underground in Atlanta. We all know how that turned out.
In the present, John checks in on Marcos. Marcos is worried about Polaris and the baby. Marcos won’t give up though. He even bought an expensive bottle of champagne for when the baby was born. But the hope is killing him. Marcos knows the Inner Circle is up to something and Polaris and their baby are in the middle of it. He’s frustrated because he doesn’t know what it is. John says he knows someone who may be able to help them.
Reeva (Grace Byers) tells the Frosts (Skyler Samuels) that the blackout is causing too much attention. They convinced the city that it was a lightning strike, but Reeva wants to eliminate all witnesses. Esme says they have no one to worry about. Her sisters call her soft and blame Esme’s time with Mutant Underground. Reeva doesn’t care. She send the Frosts to take care of the guard and the manager who saw them at the warehouse.
Last week, Clarice (Jamie Chung) and John were helping a girl, Christina (Danube Hermosillo), find her sister Jasmine (Mia Clyburn). Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Clarice tell Christina that they found her. Christina asks to go with them to get Jasmine, but it’s too dangerous. Christina breaks a lamp trying to convince them. Lauren reminds her that they are in hiding and can’t draw attention to themselves.
Lauren has another dream about Andy, but this time, he’s angry when he sees her. He tries to ignite their Fenris power and Lauren tries to pull away. This time, Lauren pulls so hard that she falls over the side of the building. Andy runs to the edge, but Lauren disappears. Andy wakes up from the dream.
Jace Turner (Coby Bell) returns home from work. He has been working for a private security firm for the past three months. And he’s in therapy after what happened in Atlanta. He mentions the blackout in DC, but Paula (Frances Turner), his wife stops him. She knows about the Mutant Underground files he keeps in the attic. She begs him not to go down this road again.
John tells Clarice about Evangeline and the extreme measures she took to put him through detox. He thinks Evangeline can help them find the Inner Circle. That’s if she’s still talking to him.
The Frosts go to the warehouse where Polaris gave birth. They kill the security guard and the manager. Then they destroy the building. Just as Reeva asked them to do.
Caitlin packs a bag. She has agreed to go with John and Marcos to see Evangeline in Philadelphia. Reed tries to talk her out of it, but they end up fighting. Reed reminds her again, Andy chose to leave them. He says they need her at home. She’s become a ghost since Andy left and isn’t there for Lauren. Caitlin says Reed is obsessed with work. He asks her not to go for the family. Caitlin says the family is why she has to go.
Reeva conducts a training session with a sleepy Andy. He has to break through three concrete walls, each stronger than the last. Reeva needs him to break through them all. The walls are made of the same materials as their next target. Andy gets through the first two, but can’t get through the third because he’s thinking of Lauren. Reeva isn’t happy. She tells Sage (Hayley Lovitt) to get Fade (Jeff Daniel Phillips) to watch Andy.
Evangeline isn’t happy to see John, Marcos and Caitlin. She’s now a mutant rights lawyer, but if Sentinel Services make a connection between her and the MU, they will come for her. John tells her that they had a run in with a group from the Hellfire Club. They give her the flash drive with the bank records and ask her to look at them. Caitlin mentions that the group is the Inner Circle and they took her son. Evangeline’s ears perk up with mention of the Inner Circle. She’s surprised that they were able to get away with any information about the Inner Circle without anyone getting killed.
Reeva talks to Andy along to find out why he wasn’t able to break through the third wall. She says he was supposed to be able to break through. If he can’t perform, their operation is in danger. Andy says he’s having an off day. She tells him about her off day when her best friend died at the hands of the Purifiers. She says on their off days, their powers tell the truth. Reeva asks if there anything Andy needs to tell her. Andy says no and promises not to fail again.
Reed goes through his father’s things. He reads an excerpt about Reed’s powers. Lauren comes in to let him know that she’s leaving with Clarice. They go through some family photos. Lauren asks him if he’s okay. He says yes, but she tells him its okay not to be. He tells her not to be worried and she leaves.
Polaris sings to the baby when Andy knocks at the door. He says he feels like he should be with Lauren. Polaris warns him that he needs to be with Reeva one hundred percent. Andy says he needs to get his head back in the game. He leaves her alone to feed the baby.
Andy buys a phone and calls the clinic. He asks for Lauren, but whoever answers gives the phone to Reed instead. Reed asks who it is and how they know Lauren. Andy doesn’t answer. He hangs up and throws the phone away. The whole time, Fade has been nearby, invisible and watching Andy. He calls Reeva to tell her that they have a problem.
Jace meets an old friend from Sentinel Services and asks him about the blackout. The guy says it was a lightning strike, but Jace doesn’t believe it. Jace tries to tell his friend about Polaris, but his friend stops him. He tells Jace to let it go. He tells him not to blow his chance for a new life on a conspiracy theory. Jace goes home. He tells Paula that he cleared out the attic. He says there’s not enough justice in the world for their little girl. And if he lives in the past, he will lose his future. He’s ready to move on and Paula is happy to hear it.
Evangeline’s contacts were able to trace some of the purchases that the Inner Circle made. They are preparing for war. She tells them about Reeva Payge, one of the last remaining mutants after 7/15. She heard that Reeva had taken over the Inner Circle. John asks for her help to take down the Inner Circle, but she says they don’t have the resources. Especially now that they have Polaris and a Von Strucker descendent.
Evangeline tells them that half the Mutant Underground has been taken apart. Sentinel Services is cracking down on mutants and anyone who helps mutant. She won’t let John destroy what they have left. She tells them to leave. They walk out, frustrated. Marcos and Caitlin assure John that what happened in Atlanta wasn’t his fault. John accepts responsibility for what happened. He turns around and goes back to Evangeline’s office.
Andy tries to break through the walls again. He’s doing a good job until he gets to the third wall. He thinks about Lauren dying and fails to break the wall. Reeva asks the Frost what’s wrong with Andy. They read his thoughts and know that thoughts of Lauren is blocking his concentration.
John enters the office. He says he won’t give up. Evangeline says they can’t win. John says they need something to believe in. She says there aren’t enough people left in the Mutant Underground. But she knows of a mutant separatist named Erg. he lives in the tunnels under DC. She sends John to find him. She says Reeva is ruthless and she will kill his friends before letting them leave her. That means they may have to kill their friends to stop them. She apologizes for giving him hope.
Reeva discusses Andy’s situation with the Frosts. She’s worried about Andy’s behavior saying his family connection is stronger than they thought. Esme reminds him that he is a Von Strucker, he is there because of his family. If they don’t have Andy, their dream dies. Reeva will talk to him and assess if he’s really on their side. If he’s not, she will take care of it. Esme reminds her that Andy is only fifteen. Reeva is prepared to what is necessary.
Reeva talks to Andy, giving him another chance to tell Reeva what his problem is. He lies and tells her that he trusts them. She says he has doubt and secrets and that’s okay, but he shouldn’t lie about it. Andy says he’s not lying about anything. Reeva takes a deep breath, preparing to use her deathly voice on Andy. Andy speaks up. He tells Reeva that his mom has been messaging him on the online game that he plays, but he hasn’t answered. He also tells her that he tried to call Lauren, just to hear her voice. And he tells her about the dreams. Reeva tells him to use his fear in his power. They are building a home for mutants, including Lauren. She asks him to be strong.
Clarice and Lauren reunited Jasmine with Christina. They take the girls to get ready to leave for their new home. Reed tries to talk to Lauren, saying it can’t be easy for her to see siblings reunited. She says she’s fine, but he keeps pressing her. She turns the tables on him about fighting with Caitlin and then pretend everything is okay. They killed people in Atlanta, but they never talk about it. They don’t know what it means for her to have Andy come home. Reed apologizes, but Lauren is too upset and leaves. Reed’s power is triggered. He tries to balance himself, but burns the wall when he touches it.
John returns home and Clarice can tell that he’s bothered by something. He tells her that he’s fine, but later he can’t sleep. He’s still thinking about what happened in Atlanta. He goes down to the junkyard and punches on a truck, thinking about the people he lost.
Marcos finds Caitlin on the roof and they open his bottle of champagne. They toast to the baby. Marcos is scared about the coming war and what that means for Polaris. Caitlin tells him not to despair.
Andy tries one more time in the training room. He doesn’t let his fear affect his performance. He breaks through the third wall with ease, making Reeva happy.
Marcos finishes the bottle of champagne and throws the bottle in frustration. He remembers when he first met Polaris and how they created their own borealis. He picks up a piece of the bottle and shines his light through the glass.
Polaris sees his light from her room. She gets out of bed to get a better look. She tells Dawn that her daddy is saying hello. When Polaris looks at Dawn, her breathing is staggered and she is running a fever. Polaris picks up the baby and calls for help.
There’s an obvious dream connection between Andy and Lauren. I wonder how long it will take them to figure it out and start communicating.
Of course the baby gets sick. And Marcos will be the only one who can help her. But how much will Reeva give in to help Polaris.
Will Esme continue to question Reeva’s actions? Someone needs to. That’s something that could get interesting.
I’m really excited to see what Reed can do. And how it will change him.
