Summary

“MJ Rodriguez has constantly moved around with her mother for as long as she can remember. They have also kept the secret that she is a princess from a mystical island called Biringan, a place full of magic and hidden from the human world. MJ is also half-encanto, which means she possesses magical abilities from her birthplace.

When MJ learns that her father, King Vivencio, has died unexpectedly, she must step in as his rightful heir. Even though the princess knows very little of this world, she will soon be crowned the new Queen of Biringan.

After being thrust alone into an unfamiliar world, this confused young woman must quickly learn as much as possible about her homeland. Many in Biringan see the young half-encanto as an outsider and a threat to the traditions of their home. All at once, MJ must deal with new relationships and angry insurrectionists, all while learning everything for the impending coronation.”

“The young heiress soon learns that her father’s death seems to be a curse inflicted by a dangerous sorceress who now targets MJ. As if this wasn’t enough, the half-encanto must also discover and harness her magical talent before the fast-approaching coronation, or she will never be accepted as queen.

Some offer to help, like the charming Sir Lucas, a handsome knight of Sigbin Court. However, with a target on her back, can MJ trust anyone? Will she be able to harness her magic, avenge her father and become the rightful heir of Biringan? Does this half-encanto have what it takes to prove everyone wrong?”

The Encanto’s Daughter

The Encanto’s Daughter by Melissa de la Cruz is a fast-paced YA romantic fantasy inspired by Filipino mythology. De la Cruz paints a beautiful image of Biringan, particularly with her vivid descriptions of the flower-filled palaces and sparkling gowns. This makes a great spring read as flowers bloom all around. It was easy for me to imagine the wonder of the world De la Cruz has created.

The romantic relationship between Lucas and MJ in The Encanto’s Daughter feels rushed. MJ very quickly jumps into a pretty serious relationship with Lucas, who was initially kind of dating her rival. It is doubtful that with everything going on, MJ would care to or even have time to date, especially someone associated with her rival. I found their relationship nonsensical and a bit forced for the sake of some romance.

MJ’s story moves quickly, making it a pleasant, breezy read. The author does a great job of providing vital information without bogging you down with details. In this adventure, you will find action, fantasy, romance and intrigue, which is an excellent combination of everything.

The Encanto’s Daughter is a solid mystery with lots of questions that demand answers. Some of these questions are not answered until the very last line, which is a great way of keeping you invested until the end.

To Read or Not To Read

Overall, The Encanto’s Daughter is a smooth read, and the Filipino mythology is a breath of fresh air in an oversaturated genre. De la Cruz definitely creates a beautiful picture of a strange realm. Combining The Princess Diaries and Harry PotterThe Encanto’s Daughter blends the intrigue and drama of royal court with the excitement and danger of ancient magic.
