Highlights:

  • Flesh of The Gods, a vampire feature from Mandy director Panos Cosmatos will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Issacs.
  • The film follows the story of a wealthy couple drawn into the dangerous, hedonistic nightlife of 1980s Los Angeles.
  • Flesh of The Gods is from the writer of Seven and is being produced by both Adam McKay’s Hyper Object Industries and Issac’s Mad Gene Media.

Power Couple

THR is reporting that Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac will play a married couple in the upcoming vampire thriller Flesh of The Gods. The film will be directed by Panos Cosmatos who helmed the 2018 psychedelic horror film Mandy starring Nicolas Cage, with a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker, the writer of David Fincher’s Seven.

Obsessed With the 80s

According to producers, Flesh of The Gods follows a married couple, Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart), who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of 80s LA. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic woman and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence.

In a statement, Cosmatos described the film, “Like Los Angeles itself Flesh of the Gods inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare. Both propulsive and hypnotic, Flesh will take you on a hot rod joy ride deep into the glittering heart of hell.”

It’s not clear who the vamps are in this description, but the 80s vibe comes through loud and clear. This is a return to that neon era for both Panos Cosmatos and Kristen Stewart. Cosmatos’ last film, Mandy, was set in 1983 and Kristen Stewart’s last film, neo-noir Love Lies Bleeding, was set in 1989. And when you consider that Ti West’s upcoming horror feature MaXXXine is set in 80s Los Angeles, it also starts to feel like that decade is taking on a bloody tinge, at least in the mind of Hollywood writers and directors.

Extra Produced

Beyond the creatives involved, this movie has some heavy hitters producing as well. Adam McKay’s Hyper Object Industries is behind the movie and is co-producing with Mad Gene Media, the production company launched by Oscar Issac and his wife, director/writer Elvira Lind.

McKay, who has not spent much time in the genre world, said of the project, “We think it’s wildly commercial and wildly artful.” He went on to add, “Our ambitions are to make a movie that ripples through popular culture, fashion, music, and film.”

Producers hope to start shooting Flesh of the Gods later this year.
