With the plot thickening and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) preparing to put herself directly into Bruno Mannheim’s (Chad Coleman) crosshairs, I cannot wait to hit play on Superman & Lois, season 3 episode 5, “Head On.”

The episode begins with Lois packing a bag for her treatment. She plans to meet Jonathan (Michael Bishop) and Jordan (Alex Garfin) at their Valentine’s Day dance. The boys caution her not to push herself as Jordan expresses frustrations with their new house guest.

Out front, Sam (Dylan Walsh) expresses his own reservations about Lois’s plan and doing too much. Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) insists they listen to Lois and let her set her own limits. While at Mannheim’s facility, Clark stays with her through her chemo.

At the diner, Sarah (Inde Navarrette) and Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) discuss the dance. As they talk, they’re interrupted by the previous mayor’s son who accuses Lana of not caring and cheating to win her spot as the current mayor. While on the Kent farm, Sam and Natalie (Tayler Buck) race on four-wheelers.

After Natalie beats Sam back, they discover Matteo (Spence Moore II), the guy she met at the party. Jordan invited him back when he saw him in town. At the wellness facility, Lois looks around the facility. Back at the Kent house, Sam expresses safety concerns about a stranger visiting the farm. Sam makes Matteo nervous as he looks on. After Natalie mentions her dance, he offers to rent a tux to go with her.

While Kyle (Erik Valdez) is on the side of the road, changing a tire, Jonathan stops to check on him. The gesture then causes Kyle to recruit him, saying they need some extra volunteers. At the mayor’s office, Chrissy (Sofia Hasmik) informs Lana that the former mayor’s son isn’t the only one who blames her. Chrissy offers to help clear the air.

Waiting for Lois to return, Clark bonds with some of the patients, learning about their cancer journeys. Lois steals a badge and breaks into an office, only to be caught by Mannheim. When confronted, Lois accuses him of using Superman’s (Hoechlin) blood to make powered people. He denies this and then offers to show her his state-of-the-art research lab.

Meanwhile, back at the school, the kids enjoy the dance. When Candice (Samantha Di Francesco) approaches Jonathan, she reveals she can live with her aunt in Topeka. It’s four hours away from Smallville. They agree to still see each other on weekends.

At the Wellness Facility, a nurse asks Clark about Lois’s whereabouts. While Lois tours the facility with Mannheim, he explains his motivation for the facility. The motivations come from watching a family member suffer. When their conversation ends, he agrees to send over all of Dr. Hook’s research.

Back at the dance, Jonathan asks Kyle if he can volunteer during the week despite work instead of on the weekends. Kyle doesn’t budge but challenges him to figure out what is more important to him. Even though the dance is in full swing, Natalie sits outside alone after storming off from Matteo. Sam follows her out, offering to scare him for her.

She shares how behind she feels never having been kissed or having a relationship and Sam shares wise advice. He encourages her to go back in and face it. Sarah heads outside to comfort Junior (Dylan Leonard)  – the previous mayor’s son.

In another outside conversation, Candice encourages Jonathan not to turn down the volunteer position and agrees to work something out, seeing each other. To liven up the dance, Kyle steals the dancefloor and Chrissy joins him.

After Lois gets ready for the dance, she finds Clark in his casual clothes rather than formal wear. Clark expresses concern, but she insists on not missing the dance. A break-in at the D.O.D interrupts their conversation. Superman battles Jason Distefano (Jason Beaudoin) also known as Deadline, attempting to stop a file transfer. Once Superman bests him, it’s too late. The file reaches one hundred percent.

Outside the dance, Sarah shares a drink with Junior just as takes a sip, Lana catches her. She allows her to explain and shows some understanding. When Clark arrives back home, he finds Lois sitting on the couch. She realizes that as much as she wants to go to the dance, she can’t. They come to an agreement that Clark will continue sharing his opinion with her no matter how much she insists otherwise.

Although the kids forgot to take photos, they bring the dance to her instead. While she and Clark and Jonathan and Candice dance, Jordan encourages Sam to join a dating site. In such a sweet moment, Jordan cuts in to dance with Lois while Clark looks on.

A text from Lana interrupts the morning in bed for Chrissy and Kyle. When Chrissy meets with her, Lana decides not to go public with digging up dirt on former Mayor Dean. She chooses instead to name the new town hall after him to help the town heal.

The Kents say goodbye to Candice and Sam delivers the bad news that Deadline got the locations of D.O.D facilities, allowing the intergang to rob them. They stole Bizarro’s corpse.

This episode did not disappoint with emotionally charged moments. Lois’s will to want to do everything even as her family cautions her both inspires and frustrates me for her. Clark is so supportive and respectful of her boundaries, but he also still voices his worries and I love that. I would never have guessed that Mannheim would get Bizarro’s corpse or that the D.O.D would still have it. As always, I can’t wait for the next episode!
