Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Rian Johnson dropped an interesting tidbit. While working on his script for The Last Jedi, he was knowledgeable about what was happening in The Force Awakens. And he decided he wanted to ask a big favor.

In the original script, BB-8 was to go with Rey and Chewbacca to Ahch-To to see Luke Skywalker. However, Johnson had some things in mind. “I asked if R2 could come with Rey, and if BB-8 could stay behind with the Resistance. Originally it was BB-8 who went with Rey, which makes sense for the story in a way. But I asked, ‘Can you do me this solid and switch the droids?’” Now why would Johnson ask for the droids to be switched? Time to put on our speculation hats!

It only makes since for BB-8 to be with Rey because they were together most of The Force Awakens. And while they forged a wonderful relationship, he’s still Poe’s droid. That aside, the reason they’ll need R2 is because of what happened in Luke’s past. We know R2 was there for a major event, more than likely the fall of Luke’s academy. R2 may be vital to answers regarding the fall if/when Luke refuses to divulge. And not only that, R2 has been with Luke through a lot, so it makes sense to reunite the two. Speculation hats off!
