Yesterday, Deadline informed us on some important casting news. According to the site, Alec Baldwin has been cast as a very popular and familiar character for the upcoming, untitled Joker film. The Todd Phillips film already has some big names in the cast list including Robert DeNiro, Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beatz, Marc Maron and more. However, Baldwin gets the most interesting casting because he’ll be playing none other than Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas Wayne. At least that’s what the rumor is!

It’s made completely unclear how vital his role will be in the film, but given Baldwin’s casting, you have to imagine it’s pretty significant. How will Thomas Wayne tie into a plot involving the Joker, a popular talk show host, and a single mother? It sure beats me. It also opens the doors to so many questions involving the future of the character of the Joker and how a young Bruce fits into the time period. I’m really curious to see how it plays out the closer we get to the release date.

If I may be frank, I don’t particularly like the casting. I don’t hate it, mind you. But I just don’t really see Baldwin as a billionaire philanthropist that also dotes on his son, given his previous work. But I am ready to be dead wrong. This whole cast has me confused and excited as to what’s to come. I feel that it’s going to be unlike any DC film we’ve seen as of late. And with Baldwin’s casting, it seems strange but I’m getting a Sin City vibe from it. Casting a lot of big names for a gritty comic book film adaptation. We’ll see if it compares.

What do you think of Baldwin’s casting as Thomas Wayne? Are you luke warm on it or loving it? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more DC film news. The untitled Joker film is set to hit theaters in 2019.
