The last episode of Critical Role and Amazon Prime Video’s The Legend of Vox Machina left off with quite the cliffhanger. As Scanlan (Sam Riegel) created quite the diversion, the rest of Vox Machina stormed Professor Anders’ (Stephen Root) home in search of Percy’s (Taliesin Jaffe) sister Cassandra (Esmé Creed-Miles). The fight continues in episode eight, “A Silver Tongue,” as Percy sets his sights on getting his next target. What are we doing wasting time here – let’s go!

DISCLAIMER: This is a recap and, by nature, contains more spoilers than dice rogues roll for sneak attacks. If you haven’t gotten the chance to watch it yet, we suggest heading over to Amazon Prime and checking it out!

“A Silver Tongue” picks up at the Everlight Temple, where Pike (Ashley Johnson) struggles to connect with her patron. Through her meditations, we can see that she blunders to overcome the darkness within her. The head cleric (Anjali Bhimani) tries to get her to take a break. Pike isn’t ready to give up just yet and decides it’s better for her to try on her own.

Cue dance party intro. Don’t judge me, we are heading into dark times and I’ll take whatever moment of serotonin I can get.

The episode picks back up in Anders’ home as Percy rushes to Cassandra’s side. Thankfully, Keyleth (Marisha Ray) and Vax (Liam O’Brien) are right behind. The two prep a healing spell as Anders taunts poor Percy. Leaving the two half-elves behind, Percy pursues Anders and the two end up going head to head. Anders continues the taunts about Percy’s parents and his upbringing before letting Percy in on a secret.

The Briarwoods (Matthew Mercer and Grey Griffin) were much better bosses. Even bestowing gifts like the silver tongue and uses it to bring the numerous suits of armor around him to life. Thankfully, Percy has some good dexterity, but his bullets seem to just bounce off the armor. Almost cornered, Vax rushes in to help aid him but promises that he will let him get his revenge as long as he lives.

Downstairs, Vex (Laura Bailey) and Grog (Travis Willingham) are still dealing with the guard. One particular guard (Mercer) can’t help but be awed by Vex’s shooting and even tries to convince her for a private lesson. Too bad she puts an arrow in his forehead before they rush off to help the others upstairs. The two join the frey as Keyleth continues to try and heal Cassandra’s wound.

As the spell draws to a close, it looks as if Keyleth failed. Until Cassandra freakishly comes back from the dead, scaring everyone, including Keyleth. Knowing the spell worked, she leaves Cassandra to pass back out before rushing out and swapping to Minxy. But no matter what the group does, these armor golems just won’t stay down. Also, side note, I play a gunslinger in my own Dungeons and Dragons campaign and I am jealous of the number of bullets Percy seems to have. Seriously jealous.

Anywho. As the fight continues, Percy and Vex realize that the best way to beat the armor golems is to take out the straps holding them together. Things get a lot easier as pieces of the giant suits start falling apart. Grog, who doesn’t need any help, gets some unwelcomed help from Vax. And we all laugh at the funny moment until Anders uses a charm spell and our poor Grog turns on his friends. Of course, his sights are set on Vax.

“A Silver Tongue” jumps back to Pike, who is in another meditation. She finds herself alone and the darkness keeps pulling her down. She struggles against the black chains as she demands an answer from the Everlight (Tracie Thoms). As she gets pulled under, we finally get our first glimpse of the goddess’ light and we see Pike rise again. Pike opens up about feeling lost and how she needs to find a way back to her light. But the Everlight calls Pike out on her lies. Only truth will help this gnome.

Back in Whitestone, the fight between Grog and the others continues. Keyleth tries to get him to see reason, but it doesn’t work. Their best bet would be to disarm him. They manage that, but Grog still keeps throwing punches and tosses the others into walls and even throws a book at Vax. My spirit animal is wrecking this place! I just wish he was on their side at the moment.

Vex realizes that they aren’t going to beat Grog and tries to set her sights on Anders. He quickly charms her, too, before casting the spell on everyone else. Well, everyone except Percy. Anders thinks it would be the perfect revenge for everything the De Rolo’s put him through if Percy died at the hands of his friends.

Backed into a corner, covered in vines and facing off against his friends, Percy apologizes to Anders. He tells him that he can see that his parents never saw his true potential and Anders. Flattery is what Anders thinks this is. And it’s years too late. But, Percy’s speech buys him enough time to calculate some angles and unleashes the black smoke within as he takes a shot that ricochets off a few things before severing Anders’ silver tongue. Now that he doesn’t have it, the charm spell on the others is broken.

While the others try and contain the tongue, which Grog does with an arrow, Percy makes his way to exact his revenge on Anders. Black smoke, mask and the burning steel of his pepperbox are the last things Anders sees before Percy blows his head off. Just as Anders hits the ground, Cassandra calls out to him, completely drawing him out of the black smoke’s trance.

Percy rushes to her side and while the two are back together, it’s clear that their relationship isn’t in the best of conditions. Cassandra shares why the Briarwoods kept her alive and how she worked with them to try and feed information to the rebellion. It’s a happy(ish) moment after what I was sure was going to be a dark turn in Percy’s story.

The others search the house and while they don’t find anything valuable, Vex finds a star chart. Or a connect the dots if you ask Grog. Keyleth knows that the stars show the time and date for the solstice (just five days away), but no one knows why they have it. They decide now is the time for them to signal Archibald (Dominic Monaghan) and the rebellion. Keyleth uses her druid ability to create the De Rolo crest out of the clouds.

Everyone sees it, including Lady Briarwood, who kills her new steward (Mercer) to help strengthen and protect Lord Briarwood. In a cemetery in town, we watch as more undead rise. It looks like Vox Machina’s fight isn’t over.

“A Silver Tongue” jumps back to the Everlight temple where the Everlight is burning away Pike’s lies to reveal the truth. Pike swears she isn’t lying to the Everlight, but the goddess already knows that. Pike has been lying to herself this whole time. She finally opens up about how she feels she left the righteous path alongside her friends. Pike realizes that she cut herself off from the light, not the other way around. Everlight tells her that she just needs to be true to herself no matter what path she walks.

Back in Whitestone, Scanlan is celebrating after dealing with Duke Vedrime (Rory McCann) before he catches two gentlemen enjoying a quiet tryst. Only, Scanlan realizes that it’s an undead monster eating someone else. And then more undead pop up. And it’s an unwelcomed zombie party. Clearly, Scanlan does not feel the same way about the undead shambling creatures as I do.

The others are quietly making their way through the streets of Whitestone when Scanlan comes rushing in with the news. Except he is so out of breath that it doesn’t come out right at first. They think he is saying whore and well…he is trying to tell them that the hoard is coming. The episode comes to a close as Vox Machina finds themselves surrounded by the zombies with nowhere to go.

Well, that sure was an episode. Anytime we get to see No Mercy Percy and Grog kicking ass is a good day for me. Maybe it would have been better if my spirit animal wasn’t being forced to crush his friends. But hey, Vax deserved some of those hits. But clearly, the fight isn’t over and now we need to figure out how our heroes will deal with the zombies. And what is Pike’s choice going to be? Her friends need her, but will she be able to continue down their path and still connect with the Everlight?

We’ve got one more episode for this week, so drop everything you are doing and let’s dive in!
