Supernatural kicked off the new year with a new show…sort of. If you haven’t heard by now, Supernatural has a sister show. Wayward Sisters is about Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) as she trains her adopted daughters to be hunters. Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), and Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster) welcome newcomers Patience Turner (Clark Backo) and Kaia Nieves (Yadira Guevara-Pip) to the family as they attempt to save Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles).
And where are Sam and Dean? Good question. Kaia is a dreamwalker. She helped Jack (Alexander Calvert) find Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith). Kaia attempted to transport Jack and the Winchesters to Apocalypse World. Jack made it, but Sam and Dean went to the Bad Place.
Claire Novak left Jody’s home to hunt monsters. She shows up in Iowa to rescue a girl from werewolves. Jody calls Claire to let her know that Sam and Dean are missing. She asks Claire to come home.
When Claire gets to Sioux Falls, everyone is acting strange around her. She thinks they are mad at her for leaving without telling them where she was going. The ladies talk about Sam and Dean. Alex plays a message from Sam that mentions Kaia. They search for her and only come up with very little information.
Claire meets Patience and learns that she’s psychic. Jody tells Claire about Patience vision that Claire will die. Claire doesn’t believe her and tells Jody to stop worrying about her. She says she is a good hunter. Jody expresses her fear that Claire is too reckless and that’s what leads to her death. Claire says she won’t die and leaves.
A driver finds Kaia on the side of the road and calls 911. Kaia is loaded into an ambulance as someone watches from afar. Claire follows Alex to work at the Sioux Falls hospital. They talk about Jody and how Alex helps her. Claire says Jody worries too much. They change the subject to Kaia and find that she’s just been admitted.
Claire finds Kaia as she is preparing to leave. She tells Kaia that she’s a friend of Sam and Dean’s. Kaia is scared and runs away. Claire follows her outside and they meet a monster in the alley. Kaia freezes and watches Claire fight the monster. Jody shows up and shoots the monster. Claire jumps on it and stab it. She stands up and tells Kaia to start talking.
They take the monster back to Jody’s garage and Alex examines it. On the porch, Claire talk to Kaia about the monster. Kaia says she’s seen that thing before, but only in her dreams. She says the monsters come in packs so there will be more. They start comparing scars until Claire finally asks Kaia what happened to Sam and Dean. They go back to the garage and Kaia explains that she’s a dreamwalker. She tells them about the Bad Place and how she opened a door to another world. Claire thinks that door is still open and wants to find it to save Sam and Dean. Kaia thinks they might already be dead.
In the Bad Place, Sam says they have to find a way back to their world. Dean tells him that no one knows that they are gone. So how would anyone know how to find them. They hear a growl and hide. A hooded woman walks up and looks around at where the brothers were.
Patience decides to go home. Alex tries to talk her out of it, but Patience is scared. She says she’s not a fighter. When she gets to her car, she has another vision. There are more of the monsters head their way. Patience rushes into the house to warn everyone. When the monsters get to the house, the girls are gone. Claire watches the security footage on her phone. She knows Patience is the real deal.
The next morning, the ladies meet up with Sheriff Donna Hanscum. Donna brings all of her weaponry. Kaia tells them where she last saw the Winchesters. Alex locates the abandoned shipyard. Jody asks Claire to stay behind to protect the other girls. She leaves with Donna. Kaia asks Claire if she’s scared. Claire admits that Patience’s vision shook her up. She’s okay with sitting back while Jody takes care of everything. But, Sam and Dean saved her life. It’s time for her to return the favor.
Donna scopes out the shipyard and finds Baby. They go into the shipyard and see the remnants of the angels. They make their way upstairs and find the rift. Jody wants to go in, but something growls from behind them. They leave to check it out and find more of the monsters on the ship. The monsters spot the women and chase them. Jody and Donna hide in a car.
Sam and Dean walk through the forest in the Bad Place. They hear footsteps and someone runs past them. The guys turn around and are attacked by the hooded woman. She knocks them both out. She ties them to trees and hits a large skull. The monster growls in the distance. Dean says they are going to be dinner.
Claire tries to call jody, but there’s no answer. She asks Patience for her car keys. Donna and Jody listen as the monsters creep past the car. One of the monsters jumps on top of the car and Donna starts shooting. A flame lights up the monster from outside. Jody exits the car and sees the girls. Claire sees the light from the rift and runs to the room. Jody and Kaia follow her. The rift is closing. Claire tells Jody that she has to save Sam and Dean. Jody says okay. Claire takes Kaia’s hand and they jump through.
Donna loads the guns and hands them to the girls. More monsters show up and the girls have to run. They make their way upstairs and yell for Jody. Patience and Alex block the staircase to give them some time. They make it to the room where the rift door is open and wait for the monsters to break through. The monsters arrive and they all start shooting, except for Patience. She watches the others kill the monsters and one gets close to Patience. She kills it and all of the monsters are dead.
The hooded woman stands by to watch the monster eat the Winchesters. Kaia leads Claire to the boys and they cut their ropes. They ask for Jack. Kaia says he’s in the Apocalypse World with their mom. The monster shows up and the group runs to the rift. The hooded woman shows up at the door and throws a spear at Claire. Kaia pushes her out of the way, but is hit by the spear. Claire holds her hand as Kaia dies. The monster comes up behind the woman. Claire starts to go after the woman, but Dean grabs her and they run through the door.
Jody catches Claire as she falls through the door and holds her. She looks at Sam as he shakes his head, indicating that Kaia didn’t make it. Patience watches them and sees her vision. She saw a spear with blood and thought it was Claire. It was actually Kaia. Sam and Dean check on Claire, but she won’t talk to anyone. Sam says the rift was open for a while, so there may be more monsters. Jody says they will handle it. They say goodbye to Jody and leave.
Jody checks on Claire. Claire blames herself for Kaia’s death. She says she races in without a thinking. She gets why Jody is always so worried. Jody says she doesn’t have to handle it alone. They are all there for her.
Alex, Patience and Donna clean up the house. Patience is a little shook after killing a monster. Alex welcomes her to the family. Claire starts writing in her journal. She says she came back to save Sam and Dean and they did. Claire and her family. She’s staying not because she’s broken, but because she needs them. She vows to find the thing that killed Kaia.
The hooded woman jumps through the rift. She removes her hood. It’s Kaia! WHAT!?
Very strong showing for Wayward Sisters! I’ve always liked the idea that there were other hunters in the world, but we didn’t really know what their experiences are until now. Jody is such a staple on Supernatural. It’s only fitting that she should get her own show. Especially since she took in Alex, one time Vampire captive, and Claire, daughter of Jim Novak and former werewolf captive. *Side note* for those of you who don’t know, Jim Novak is the name of the man whose body Castiel took over when he came to earth. So in a way, Claire is Castiel’s daughter. Cool huh!
I really liked the idea that they brought in Patience. She will give them some leverage in the same manner that Castiel provides from time to time. I was a little disappointed when Kaia died, but knowing she is now the bad gal, makes the story more interesting. Excellent Twist! And the addition of Donna will make the group of gals so much fun to watch. This cast has it all! I’m excited for Wayward Sisters to begin it’s first season.
