Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) is a field sergeant in the Los Angeles Police Department and one of the main characters on 9-1-1. She is a dedicated mother, wife and police officer who works hard to keep the city of Los Angeles safe while making it home to her kids and husband.

When the show first started, Athena was going through a divorce as her husband came out to her, and together, they decided to separate and let their children know why. Harry and May, their kids, live with Athena. However, as the show goes on, Harry moves away with his father, and May attends college after spending time working as a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

Even though one of the most important aspects of Athena Grant’s life is her career in the LAPD, her love life became just as important the moment she started dating Bobby (Peter Krause). Bringing these two characters together was one of the many ways in which 9-1-1 intertwined the firefighters and the police officers’ stories.

Not too long after the show started, Bobby and Athena married in Season 2, Episode 18, “This Life We Choose.” Ever since, these two characters have been together and have helped each other navigate the hardships of life, from Bobby’s recovery to Athena’s attack.

The Real Deal

Besides being amazing at her job and a loving wife, Athena Grant is also a great friend. Throughout the series, her friendship with Henrietta (Aisha Hinds) has been one of her strongest bonds. This friendship has proven how strong the bond between two women can be. They have each other’s back and are willing to call each other out when they make a mistake.

These special relationships are what make Athena’s storyline so complex and well-rounded. If you have been following 9-1-1 closely, you will know about Athena’s past, her exes, her decision to become a cop, the difficulties she faces on the job and how important her children are to her.

Athena Grant is the kind of police officer, friend and partner you want in your corner. She will always go the extra mile to make sure those she loves are okay and to take care of the city of Los Angeles. Everything she does is well-thought-out; even in the worst circumstances, she will always have a plan.

So, be like Athena Grant. Defend the ones you love. Look good wearing sunglasses. Have your friends’ backs. Always put your children first. And be ready to go on a cruise with your partner.
