War comes to town on Marvel‘s Echo, episode three. In “Tuklo,” Maya (Alaqua Cox) faces the consequences for her latest actions, but her family could end up paying the price as well. This episode is directed by Catriona McKenzie (Aboriginal Australian, Gunai/Kurnai)

IN THE LATE 1800s

If you haven’t figured it out by now, each episode introduces the viewers to one of Maya’s ancestors. Each ancestor faced an adversity that with the help of Chafa (Julia Jones), the first Choctaw, they are able to overcome. In the 1800s, the Choctaw were forced to protect their people with their own police force known as the Lighthorseman. Maya’s ancestor Tuklo (Dannie McCallum) lived during this time and her father (William Belleau) was a Lighthorseman. She learned how to shoot and was a great marksman. But her father refused to let her join the Lighthorsemen. His reason was that women are thought of as life givers.

One day, the Lighthorseman rode into the woods to find criminals that threatened their people. It was a trap though. The criminals were waiting for the Lighthorsemen and began shooting at them. Tuklo sensed her father was in trouble. Her hand began to glow and she saw the faces of Chafa and Lowak (Morningstar Angeline). Tuklo ran to the woods and began shooting the criminals. She killed each of them, making her father proud.

PRESENT DAY

Chula (Tantoo Cardinal) talks to Skully (Graham Greene) about Maya. She doesn’t want Bonnie (Devery Jacobs) or Biscuits (Cody Lightning) to get caught up on Maya’s business. She says Maya is trouble, just like her father. Skully tries to convince Chula to talk to Maya, but Chula has nothing to say. Skully says maybe it’s time that she listens instead.

Vickie (Thomas E. Sullivan) gets a phone call from Zane (Andrew Howard) about Maya. Zane is on his way to Tahama to pick up Maya and tells Vickie to make sure she’s ready. It doesn’t take long for Vickie to find Maya. She is walking near a lake when she senses someone nearby. She sees Chafa and then someone grabs her, knocking her out with chloroform.

Vickie enlisted the help of two people, Grace (Erin Ownbey) and Brigitte (Lindsey Moser) to handle Maya. When Maya wakes up, she is hanging upside down from a disco ball in the skating rink. Vickie has Henry (Chaske Spencer) tied up as well. They decide to put Maya in the back room and watch her until Zane gets there. Brigitte offers to babysit.

Bonnie shows up at the rink, hoping to talk to Henry about Maya. The front door is locked, so Bonnie goes in through the delivery entrance. Vickie unties Henry long enough to get rid of Bonnie. Henry tells her that he’s being audited and can talk at the moment. At the same time he signs with one hand for her to leave immediately. Bonnie senses trouble and leaves quickly. When she gets to her truck, she starts to call for help, but Grace grabs her and takes her back inside.

They tie up Bonnie and put her in the same room as Maya. Bonnie can’t talk to Maya because both of their hands are tied. Maya has a knife in her boot and uses it to cut herself loose. She frees Bonnie too. Bonnie wants to talk, but Maya wants to find a way out. Bonnie is upset that Maya never replied to any of her messages. Maya says they drifted apart, but Bonnie disagrees.

Henry tries to talk Vickie into letting him loose, but Vickie has other plans. He tells Henry that he is collecting the bounty on Maya. Henry warns Vickie that Fisk’s men aren’t going to give him a bunch of money and let him walk away. Grace pulls Vickie to the back room saying she heard something. When they get there with Brigitte, Maya and Bonnie appear to be tied up again. Vickie argues with Grace and Brigitte until Grace knocks his phone out of his hands. Maya picks it up, showing them that she’s loose. Grace pulls a gun on her, but Vickie yells at her to put it down. They won’t get their money if Maya is dead. Bonnie offers to sign for them and tells Maya that someone is coming for her. She asks Maya what they should do. With a warning, Maya punches Bonnie.

Maya throws the phone at Brigitte so she can’t shoot her. Vickie and Grace grab Bonnie and drag her out of the room, leaving Maya by herself. Zane texts Vickie saying he has arrived. They take Bonnie up to the front with Henry while Brigitte makes sure Maya doesn’t get out. Zane brings a lot of guys with him. He is evasive when Vickie tries to talk about money. Zane wants to know that Maya is really there before he pays anyone, but Vickie wants to see the money before he hands over Maya. Zane doesn’t care what Vickie wants. He tells his guys to spread out and look for Maya.

Maya builds a gun made of parts from old skates and laser tag equipment. She uses the gun to shoot out the lights in the next room where Brigitte is sitting. Brigitte gets her gun and enters the back room, calling out for Maya. A laser appears on Brigitte’s stomach and Maya shoots objects at her and punches her, knocking her out.

Vickie continues to ask to see the bounty money from Zane. Grace comes out and is bothered that Vickie is not in control. They have Bonnie and Henry tied up next to each other. Zane continues to ask for Maya’s location and Vickie continues to ask to see the money. Vickie and Grace get a text from Brigitte, but it’s a picture of Brigitte in the back room. Maya signed it “XO” so they know it’s her. Grace leaves to check on Brigitte. Vickie tries to go with her, but Zane stops him.  He knows something is wrong. Zane orders his guys to kill Vickie.

Zane turns to Henry, asking where Maya is. Before Henry can answer, the lights go out and Rob Zombie’s “Dragula” starts playing loudly. Zane sends his guys to find Maya and to turn off the music. The thugs take Henry to the breaker box, but it’s booby trapped. Maya comes out and one by one, knocks out Zane’s men. The fight spills into the skating rink. Maya is forced to shoot some of the guys. When she shoots, Tuklo echoes within her. Maya shoots with precision and great accuracy. Henry is amazed by her. The fight stops when Maya sees Zane with his arm around Bonnie. She drops her weapons and surrenders.

Zane and his men surround Maya and Henry who are sitting in the middle of the skating rink. Zane points a gun at Henry’s head and his phone rings. By the look on Zane’s face, you can see that he already knows who it is. When he answers he fumbles his words, obviously scared of the person on the other side. He starts to ask a question, but the other person hangs up. Zane smiles and tells his men to leave, freeing Maya, Bonnie and Henry.

Maya walks a scared Bonnie to her truck. Bonnie wants to call the police, but Maya asks her not to. Maya promises that she won’t let anyone hurt Bonnie. She tells her cousin to go home and they will talk later. She goes back to Henry’s office. They try to understand what just happened. Henry is scared because he knows there is only one person who could make Zane back down with a phone call. Fisk (Vincent D’Onfrio). Maya isn’t so sure because she shot Fisk in the face. Whatever happens next, Henry says he will help Maya.

The next day, Skully gives Maya her new prosthetic leg. He engraved it with Choctaw symbols. He can tell it’s not what she wanted. Maya says she likes a simpler look. Skully reminds her that even though she lives in New York, she still represents her people. The new look means that a Choctaw warrior is on the scene.

Skully asks why Maya won’t see her grandmother. Maya thinks Chula doesn’t want to see her. Skully explains that Chula’s heart broke when Maya left. Chula left Maya’s childhood home exactly as it was because she is sad. Maya is upset because Chula could have called her at any time but didn’t. Skully says they all do things that they wish were different. He secures the new leg and leaves.

Maya rides around town and goes to a diner. She sees Bonnie sitting inside and doesn’t go in. Biscuits is at church with Chula. As the congregation sings a Choctaw hymn, Chula stares off into the distance. Later that night, Maya returns home and finds Fisk waiting for her.
