A Prequel

It’s been 60 years since Roman Polanski’s horror classic Rosemary’s Baby opened in theatres and made apartment dwellers everywhere forever suspicious of their neighbors. Well, now we have a prequel coming our way that will tell us how things got so Satanic in that Central Park West apartment building with Apartment 7A. And according to Deadline, Paramount+ will be streaming it to us sometime in the Fall.

Apartment 7A was first announced nearly two years ago when Julia Garner (Ozark) joined the project directed by Natalie James (Relic). Here’s the official logline from the studio:

When a struggling, young dancer (Garner) suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame.

What Happened in Apartment 7A?

In the original film a young woman, Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her struggling actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes) move to a spooky New York City apartment building and meet several of their odd neighbors, including Roman and Minnie Castavet (Sidney Blackmer, Ruth Gordon). When Rosemary becomes pregnant she becomes increasingly isolated, and the diabolical truth about both her neighbors and her baby is revealed after Rosemary gives birth.

The prequel has been described as an “all-new, original film” and will be set in 1965 and will reveal the events that took place in the ill-fated apartment before Rosemary and Guy moved in. An intriguing idea for sure.

The cast of Apartment 7A will also feature Dianne Wiest, Jim Sturgess, and Kevin McNally. Additional cast includes Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Hopefully By Halloween

Right now Paramount has not given us a release date, saying only that we can expect the film by “Fall” – which is a little vague. But Jeff Grossman, EVP Programming at Paramount+ did say, “Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season. Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre.” So perhaps we’ll see this movie in our cues in time for an October 31 screening. We’ll keep you updated.
