The Dead Continue to Stay Evil
Francis Galluppi, the director of the festival hit The Last Stop in Yuma County is about to see what it’s like to have a real budget. Deadline reports that Gallupi has been tapped to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie for Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures. There are no details about the project, but it is based on an original story and take that Gallupi brought to Ghost House.

It’s a big step up for the rising genre director and Raimi seems excited to work with him saying, “Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director who shows uncommon control in his feature debut.” That’s high praise from one of the certified masters of the game.
Violent Similarities
Francis Gallupi’s film credits a spare but hearty, including two impressive shorts The Gemini Project and High Desert Hell as well as several music videos for the indie band Mt. Joy. His feature debut is this year’s The Last Stop in Yuma County. A violent, neo-noir set in a small diner in the desert (this guy likes the desert). Between the trailer for Yuma and a screening of The Gemini Project, it’s not hard to see why Sam Raimi has taken a liking to the younger director.

Galluppi seems like the kind of director who leans into high tension, small casts, and plenty of violence. Not unlike a young Raimi who launched his career (and a cult franchise) with 1981’s The Evil Dead which cost just $350,000 to make helped inspire an aesthetic that was all about making a lot with a little.
Evil Dead Forever
The original film may have started with borrowed equipment, a lot of fake blood, and a young Bruce Campbell in the role of Ash, but it spawned a cinematic universe that has continued to expand. Beyond the two original sequels The Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, there was the 2013 reboot plus a TV series Ash vs The Evil Dead. In 2023 we got the stand-alone film Evil Dead Rise which grossed more than $147M worldwide.

Earlier this year Deadline reported there is another Evil Dead film in production, this one a spin-off directed by Sebastian Vanicek (Infested). This would make Gallupi’s project the seventh film in a franchise that continues to intrigue old fans (and tempt studios).
There are no release dates for either of the new movies.
