During the Sundance Film Festival, Taika Waititi sat down with HitFix to talk about his gigantic foray into the Marvel universe — directing the next Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok.

One of the big rumors floating around regarding that film came from Mark Ruffalo himself, who hinted that the Hulk and Bruce Banner might be melding together in some way and that the Hulk might be a more intelligent version of the character, able to talk and interact in similar ways as Banner would.

When asked about this specifically, Waititi said, “It’s interesting, because at the moment, there’s a big conversation that’s happening about how far to push that. Whether or not The Hulk should be [verbal/conscious].”

Waititi then went on to describe the reasoning behind those talks. It’s more than just this one film because, in the extended cinematic universe, known as the MCU, what they do in this film with the character of the Hulk will reverberate in future films.

As Waititi says, “I think a lot of those conversations have more to do with what’s going to come up in future movies. So I think a lot of those decisions are larger group decisions, rather than anything to do with just me or the writer. They have a lot of stuff that they have to consider. But I do think that’s the best way to track it. I think we all want that. I think we all want to see that development and the evolution of that character. I also think you can do it in a fun way.”

While this isn’t confirmation that we’ll see that intelligent side of the Hulk, it is certainly confirmation that Marvel Studios is interested in doing that.
