Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we spotlight strong women and nonbinary folks who inspire us. These characters are prime examples of empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.

DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for The Boys spinoff series, Gen V, particularly Emma Meyer’s arc.

Emma Meyer

Fast Facts:

Emma Meyer (Lizze Broadway), like her supe contemporaries, was injected with Compound V as a baby courtesy of her parents. She possesses the ability to alter her size, including shrinking and growing. Additionally, she boasts super strength and durability. She can get as small as an ant or as giant as a building. However, to shrink, she must purge; to grow, she must consume a significant amount of food.

Emma’s mother controlled everything she ate during her formative and adolescent years and incessantly measured her. Her “supe” name is Little Cricket, which later spawned a YouTube series called “Fun-Sized with Little Cricket.” Emma became an internet personality whose popularity skyrocketed once she enrolled at Godolkin University.

God U.

At Godolkin or God U., Emma moved in with freshman Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair). They’ve grown close throughout Season 1. Emma joined the Performing Arts program at the college, hoping to pursue an acting career. (Although she has acting credits on her resume.)

Later, she gets an offer for a reality show on Vought+. However, it’s not to her liking. Feeling the pressure from her mom and crumbling under the weight of Justine (Maia Jae Bastidas) revealing her purging secret to the world, Emma makes a risky decision. She takes up Andre Anderson’s (Chance Perdomo) offer to break into The Woods to find Sam Riordan (Asa Germann), the younger brother of the late Luke Riordan/Golden Boy (Patrick Schwarzenegger). The Woods, as we’ve learned in recent episodes, is a lab where students are experimented on for a virus that can control supes.

Finding Sam

So, after shrinking, Emma finds Sam in his quarters. Andre warns her that this is a reconnaissance mission — no “superhero sh*t.” However, Emma helps Sam break free by killing the guards on duty. She crawls into their ears and explodes their eardrums.

Next, Emma and Sam escape to an abandoned drive-in. The pair’s fledgling relationship blossoms into romance. Emma vows to ensure that those responsible for torturing Sam will pay.

In “Jumanji,” Emma learns that Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) is the culprit behind the gang’s missing memories. She tells Marie this while the latter and Jordan Li (London Thor/Derek Luh) try to persuade Andre not to kill Rufus (Alexander Calvert).

The Real Deal:

Emma’s a kind, lovable, charming person, but quickly shifts into a force of nature when the situation calls for it. She also boasts a sharp wit and cheeky sense of humor. She’s always armed with a clever one-liner. More importantly, Emma will do whatever it takes to protect those she cares about.

In this fictional world, it’s easy to pinpoint phonies and two-faced individuals whose motives are questionable. Thankfully, Emma doesn’t fall into that camp. She’s a genuine soul who speaks her mind. Her empathy extends to those who reside on the fringes of society. She also understands what it’s like to live under a microscope.

Emma is undoubtedly one of the more relatable characters in this universe because of her traumas and struggles with her self-esteem. Despite this, she overcomes them, not allowing the toxic atmosphere of God U. to hold her back.

Why She Matters:

Emma is flawed, messy and nuanced. She’s a multidimensional person with hopes and dreams who becomes a bona fide superhero by saving Sam and joining her friends to uncover The Woods. Her contributions to this mission to expose God U. and Vought is as dangerous as it is frightening. However, Emma takes it in stride, utilizing her unique abilities to save the day. On the flip side of her unshakable courage, Emma’s bubbly, vibrant personality pulls those around her into her fun-loving orbit.

So, be like Emma. Be brave. Stand up for those who need it. Kick ass and take names. Don’t let the haters get you down. Oh, and kill some baddies along the way (figuratively, of course). Get it, got it, good.

Gen V streams new episodes every Friday on Prime Video.
