Ready or not, here it comes! The Joker stand-alone film starring Joaquin Phoenix is coming and according to THR, we have another cast member joining. One who has been blowing up since starring in Atlanta and very recently Deadpool 2. We’re of course talking about the talented Zazie Beetz. And we learned a little something about her role, should she be cast.
Apparently, her role would be a “single mother” who catches the attention of the clown prince of crime. Interesting. Definitely not Harley Quinn. But it’s not made clear if Phoenix’s Joker will be fully in Joker mode when we meet him in the film or turning into the madman. What we do know about the Todd Phillips directed film is that it’s supposed to a be a crime thriller. It won’t be connected to the current DCEU slate so they can do pretty much whatever they want on their lower budget film.

I’m still a bit apprehensive of this. Less so than the Jared Leto starring film, but still. I guess I’m just not sure how I feel about Phoenix being the Joker. To be fair, Heath Ledger wasn’t exactly popular when he was cast and he blew everyone out of the water. So I’m trying to be positive about the film and see where it goes before I make too much of a judgement. But what’s a Joker film without Batman? I’m curious to see if that’s the direction they’ll go. Also I’m not sure how I feel about Beetz being a single mother that potentially falls prey to the Joker. Hoping there’s a better reasoning outside of the “vulernable” role. We won’t have to wait too long to find out because the film is set to start filming in New York in September so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more news.
What do you think about the casting and her role? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more DC film news. The untitled Joker film is set to release in theaters October 4th, 2019.
