We’ve officially got an antagonist for Captain Marvel 2! According to Deadline, Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw) has been tapped to portray the villain to Brie Larson‘s hero in the highly anticipated Marvel sequel.
Ashton is most known for starring as Josephina in 2019’s Velvet Buzzsaw opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Her other credits include Tom Ford‘s 2016 thriller Nocturnal Animals, Amazon Studios’ Oasis and TV comedy Fresh Meat. Fresh Meat was Ashton’s breakout role, wherein she stole hearts as the free-spirited Vod Nordstrom. She recently starred on Broadway in Betrayal alongside Marvel alum Tom Hiddleston.
Captain Marvel 2 recently brought on Nia DaCosta to helm the flick. WandaVision‘s Megan McDonnell has penned the script. Besides Larson as the titular Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris (WandaVision) will come on board as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel) as Kamala Khan. As per Marvel’s usual, the plot is being kept under lock and key. Additionally, Ashton’s specific role is unknown, but she’s purported to be the main villain.

Captain Marvel soared into theaters on March 8, 2019. Larson plays Carol Danvers, a United States Air Force pilot who becomes embroiled in a war between the Kree and the Skrulls. She acquires a set of out-of-this-world abilities that morphs her into a human/Kree super warrior. We were introduced to Monica Rambeau via Danvers’ friendship with Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Monica’s mother. Akira Akbar portrays the younger version of Monica in Captain Marvel.
I’m so excited to see Ashton become a global sensation. Ever since I watched her in Fresh Meat, I knew she was destined for stardom. She’s an immensely versatile performer and I’ve no doubt she’ll make a fantastic villain opposite Larson.
Captain Marvel 2 is slated to premiere November 11, 2022.
