  • The first clip is the first four minutes of the series. It shows the opening credits and Leif (Stuart Martin) narrating the story of meeting Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks) on a field of battle.

Netflix’s Twilight of the Gods

Love him or hate him, Zack Snyder‘s work stands out from the crowd as both sensation and spectacle. His animated vision of Norse mythology will soon hit Netflix with Twilight of the Gods, the story of a kick-ass warrior queen-to-be and the king who loves her and the company of misfit fighters they assemble to take down Asgard.

With Geeked Week 2024 coinciding with the series’s drop, it only makes sense for them to stoke the flames of anticipation with teaser footage to shock and awe. So they did — twice.

On Tuesday, the first four minutes of the premiere were released in a Netflix Tudum release. The series opens with Leif regaling his men with the story of meeting Sigrid. Not only do they fight side-by-side and back-to-back to defeat the invaders, she saves his life.

Love Is a Battlefield, Truly

While it isn’t the most romantic initial encounter, slaughtering hundreds and then watching a flock(?) of Valkyrie descend upon the bodies is one of the more memorable first meetings as far as epic sagas go. Sigrid is clearly blessed among mortals, and Leif is smitten.

Leif is king of Clan Völsung, a clan immortalized in medieval Icelandic sagas that expanded out to become embedded in Scandinavian lore. Sigrid has more exceptional lineage which is probably what draws Thor’s (Pilou Asbæk) uninvited attention.

Making Deals With Gods

The second clip leaps ahead to a meeting between Leif and Sigrid with their motley crew in tow and King Tiwaz and the Vanir. The Vanir, despite being gods of fertility, wisdom, and future-seeing, live forgotten and unworshipped, having been defeated in battle by the Æsir, better known as the Norse pantheon.

King Tiwaz speaks through a mortal interpreter, Thyra, and offers no help to Leif’s pleas. But when Sigrid offers something more than altruism and honor (on the counsel of a magical earworm?), he reconsiders.

Tiwaz may not hold much hope that Sigrid and Leif will succeed, but he’s willing to foreswear his oath to save the Vanir from their inevitable decay. Leif may be a great warlord, but he is willing to kneel in humility. Sigrid may be on a revenge mission, but there’s something in her that hints that unmaking the world may only be the beginning…

All eight episodes of Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods drop on Netflix on September 19.
