Do you remember Xena: Warrior Princess? We sure do. So did the Hollywood execs at NBC. Back in 2015, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told THR that a reboot was in development. It appears they couldn’t get off the ground as THR is now reporting the reboot is dead.
NBC President Jennifer Salke confirmed that the reboot is as dead as a door nail, as far as they’re concerned. But they don’t rule out the possibility of bringing it back at a later date.
Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot. I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead.
This news coming months after writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach left the project. Co-creator Rob Tapert and original producer Sam Raimi were said to be on the project as well. But if they want to bring the warrior back to the small screen, they’ll need to find another approach. Or as Salke put it: “[she] needs someone to come in with a point of view about what they want to do”.
While I can’t say that I’m upset that yet another reboot didn’t make it, I’m sure it’s upsetting for fans. Those who wish to see the warrior cry again, you’ll have to wait a while longer.
