Highlights

  • Marvel Animation has released the first trailer for the upcoming series X-Men ’97.
  • The throwback-style series is a sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran from 1992 to 1997.
  • The series begins streaming March 20 on Disney+.

A little over three decades ago, Marvel fans would huddle around their television, waiting for the newest episode of the X-Men: The Animated Series. There was no streaming and binging the entire series in one sitting. It took dedication, which did not prove too much of an issue for most fans, given the show would become legendary for its storytelling.

Those original fans, and a newer generation of mutant lovers,  will have the chance to pick up where the classic series left off. Marvel Animation has released its first trailer for X-Men ’97, a series they initially confirmed in November 2021. It begins streaming on March 20 through Disney+, starting where the original show left off in 1997. The retro style creates a similar feel to X-Men: The Animated Series, leaving hopes high for new and longtime fans alike.

X-Men ’97 derives its title from the year 1997 — the year that the final season of X-Men: The Animated Series aired. In total, the original series ran for five seasons. This upcoming show is essentially the sixth season, picking up from the Season 5 finale, “Graduation Day.” In that episode, Professor Charles Xavier, the beloved mutant leader, dies. Now, the remaining X-Men leaders are left to pick up the pieces he left behind.

The trailer starts by showing an old-school box-like television playing that last scene from the original series. Then, it cuts to scenes from the new series, as Cyclops tells the team that they have been entrusted with Professor X’s dream.

Unsurprisingly, fans get shots of protests, as non-powered people continue their onslaught against mutants. It also shows the mutants trying to come together, continuing the team left behind by Professor X.

In short, most of them (besides the beloved professor, of course). Cyclops returns as the headstrong leader of the X-Men, alongside Jean Grey. To those who prefer the smart, fiery redhead with Wolverine, there may be bad news for you. In the original series, she and Cyclops got married. Also, the trailer shows Jean Grey pregnant, plus the couple kissing and holding each other. Hope is not all lost — I just wouldn’t have too much of it.

Rogue, Beast, Jubilee, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Morph and Gambit are all in the new series. We also see Magneto, claiming that everything Professor X owned is now his, allegedly written in the man’s will.

Cast and Crew

The new series is created by Beau DeMayo, also known for the 2019 animated series The Witcher. He will serve as the lead writer, and Jake Castorena is the supervising director.

For fans of the original series’ voice actors, luck is in store for you. Cal Dodd is once again voicing Wolverine. Rogue’s voice actor, Lenore Zann, is returning to voice act in the series after recently serving in the House of Commons in Canada.

Beast (George Buza), Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith), Jean Grey (Catherine Disher) and Gambit (Christopher Potter) are all portrayed by their original voice actors.

Cyclops will be portrayed by Ray Chase, replacing Norm Spencer, who died in 2020.

IMBD has the full rundown of voice actors, as well as two seasons listed. However, that was not confirmed in the trailer. Based on the IMBD page, fans can expect 10 episodes in the first season of X-Men ’97.
