Wynonna Wednesday: WYNONNA EARP Characters as The Avengers

Melody McCune

It’s been awhile, Earpers. But, after a prolonged hibernation, Wynonna Wednesdays are back! Time to delve into our sh*tshow a.k.a. Wynonna Earp once more. With Season 4 looming around the corner, I thought it was time to rile up the masses. We fought tooth and nail to save our heroes, so why not envision them as actual superheroes? See what I did there? Yes, I want to recast the core characters of Wynonna Earp as The Avengers. Because if there’s one thing I love doing, it’s finding more reasons, however frivolous, to write about the Purgatory crew.

Wynonna Earp = Iron Man

Melanie Scrofano in Wynonna Earp and Robert Downey, Jr. in Iron Man 3

Now, this one’s a given. If anyone’s going to take up the Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) mantle, it’s the Earp heir herself (Melanie Scrofano). Tony Stark and Wynonna Earp are known the world over for their biting wit and sardonic one-liners. Yes, they clearly utilize humor as an unhealthy defense mechanism. Who doesn’t? Plus, Tony has his suit and Wynonna has Peacemaker. In addition, their loyalty to their loved ones is unmatched. They love without inhibitions and will gladly fall on their swords to save humanity. Both have been in dire straits more than once. Apocalyptic dilemmas? No problem! Just another day that ends in “y.”

Waverly Earp = Captain America

Dominique Provost-Chalkley in Wynonna Earp and Chris Evans in Captain America

Again, this pairing should come as no surprise. Captain America (Chris Evans) has the demeanor of an angel, while Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) is literally part angel on Wynonna Earp. Steve Rogers possesses an impenetrable moral compass, as does Waverly. Both will always do the right thing despite potentially insurmountable odds. In addition, Cap is also a mite gullible, and Waverly can be too. They rely heavily on their friends and family for support. Waverly wholeheartedly believes that good will always prevail over evil and Cap is proof of that. In spite of the formidable Thanos gaining a massive upper hand, Cap stood his ground and helped save the world. Both see the glass as half full, whereas Wynonna/Tony are typically the pessimists of the bunch.

Doc Holliday = Thor

Tim Rozon in Wynonna Earp and Chris Hemsworth in Thor: The Dark World

If this feels like a stretch, hear me out. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) hails from another realm and is an actual god. When he lands on Earth, he struggles to adapt to our societal landscape, in particular our modern vernacular. Doc (Tim Rozon) hails from an entirely different time period and is thrust into the present after being trapped in a well for decades. He too had to overcome a learning curve when it came to adjusting to contemporary society. While Doc may not have the strength of a god on Wynonna Earp, he’s pretty strong in his own right. He’s the best gunslinger known to humankind! And he can throw a mean right hook. Both also have a tendency to come off as surly or a little blunt. Well, Doc is more of a smooth talker, but Thor doesn’t need that. He’s got Mjolnir.

Nicole Haught = Black Widow

Kat Barrell and Scarlett Johansson

Okay, perhaps this one is too “on the nose.” Yes, they both have red hair. However, I believe these two share more in common than meets the eye. We don’t know a lot about their pasts. In Season 3 of Wynonna Earp, we learned more about Nicole’s (Kat Barrell) upbringing, but there’s still quite a bit left behind the curtain. Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) has more of a checkered/murky past than Nicole. But again, not much is known about her pre-Avengers. In addition, both women possess physical prowess in spades. They know a thing or two about combat. They’ll duke it out and then some. Despite Natasha’s hardened exterior, she holds her Avenger companions close. Nicole also loves her newfound family in Purgatory. Both will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of their loved ones.

Xavier Dolls = The Hulk

Shamier Anderson and Mark Ruffalo

This one stings a bit, Earpers. I’m still not over Dolls’ (Shamier Anderson) untimely demise. But, given his frequent presence in the first two seasons of Wynonna Earp, I figured I’d include him in this piece. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) turns green and angry, while Dolls turns into a fire lizard…who’s also angry. Too on the nose again? Anyway, both have supernatural talents. When they utilize said talents, things go pear-shaped. However, both men possess a quiet, laid back demeanor when not in supernatural form. Well, Dolls falls more on the stoic side, but he’s definitely more straitlaced than the rest of the Black Badge gang. Bruce is also quite serious compared to his Avengers brethren. Both men are immensely intelligent and have a knack for critical thinking in a pinch. Did I mention one turns green and the other turns into a fire lizard?

Jeremy Chetri = Hawkeye

Varun Saranga and Jeremy Renner

Now, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) gets a bad rap. He’s everyone’s least favorite Avenger. However, I’m quite partial to good ol’ Clint Barton. He’s a family man with a good heart. Jeremy (Varun Saranga) moves to Purgatory in Season 2 of Wynonna Earp and also cultivates his own family in our Black Badge crew. In addition, Jeremy has the biggest heart and I think he’s a family man of sorts, at least regarding his found family on the show. Clint is an outsider because he has a family on the outskirts of Avenging. Besides the family he currently has, we don’t know much about his background. I’d say the same goes for Jeremy – much of his past is shrouded. While Clint may not crack as many jokes as Jeremy, he shows off his goofy side with his best pal Natasha. Both men may not be the first called into battle when the chips are down, but they’ll withstand any and all hellfire to keep their loved ones safe.
