Welcome back to Wynonna Wednesday, Earpers! Last week, I categorized the characters of Wynonna Earp as Marvel’s The Avengers. Now, for this week, I want to fully break down that epic trailer for Season 4. You know the one. The one wherein our sh*tshow officially comes back to us. So, hold on to your butts. Grab some whiskey and doughnuts. Let’s get to Earping.

So, the trailer opens with narration courtesy of Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano). She gushes about her “celestial sister” a.k.a. Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley). Her “vampire baby daddy” a.k.a. Doc (Tim Rozon). Lastly, her “haught cop” a.k.a. Nicole (Kat Barrell). Then, Wynonna talks about how she’s nothing without them (and Peacemaker). During that line of dialogue, we see Nicole falling into what appears to be an endless void. An abyss of sorts. Could that be linked to her location at the start of the season? Perhaps what’s nestled at the bottom of said void isn’t so much of a “what,” but a “who.” Is it possible for an entire town to merely vanish into thin air and wind up in a nondescript dark hole? Well, for starters, anything’s possible on Wynonna Earp, so jot that down.
Next, we see a slew of Revenants (presumably) dragging Wynonna to a makeshift noose in a truck bed. Now, I assumed that even the Revenants disappeared along with the whole of Purgatory, but it’s possible that the demons stayed behind. Kind of akin to a “rapture” situation. If this is the case — where’s Nedley (Greg Lawson)? We know he was with Wynonna after everyone vanished. But where was he in this particular scene? Only time will tell.
Then, Wynonna is sprawled out in the snow. She hears Waverly whisper her name. Waverly appears beseeching her for help. Whether it’s an apparition or a tangible Waves remains to be seen. Is there some supernatural or psychic connection between the Earp sisters? The Earp curse may be broken, but perhaps Wynonna still has residual supernatural abilities because of it. Waverly is part angel, so we already know she’s supernaturally gifted. Wynonna, in turn, screams for Waverly. However, it almost looks as if a mysterious someone is holding her back and she’s watching Waves endure something torturous. What could it be?
Next, we see Wynonna, Nicole, and presumably Valdez walking down a corridor. There’s a horde of demons mucking about, so we know Purgatory’s demon problem hasn’t subsided along with the eradication of Bulshar. Another shot shows Waverly and Doc hoisting Wynonna through a mysterious portal in the snow. So, now other realms are being introduced into Wynonna Earp. That definitely checks out, considering the fact that the Garden is technically a different realm from Earth. After hearing the click of several guns, we see Doc and Wynonna standing back-to-back in Shorty’s. A group of formidable demons surround them. “It’s just so good to be home,” Wynonna says.
Then, Wynonna greets Nicole a.k.a. “you glorious ginger b*tch.” Nicole isn’t as glad to see Wynonna though. Instead of a warm greeting in return, Nicole gives Wynonna a mean right hook to the face. Presumably, there’s going to be some tension between Wynonna and Nicole. Does it have anything to do with Waverly? Perhaps Nicole is angry because Wynonna decided to save Purgatory first over her sister?
Next, there’s a series of quick shots. We see Waverly has her hands on Doc’s face as he screams bloody murder. Of course, Doc is a vampire and Waverly is part angel. Hence why Doc is screaming from her touch. This scene perfectly mirrors last season when Waverly killed Bobo Del Rey (RIP) for good. Now, I’m really hoping Bobo finds his way back to the show. But I’m also just a huge Michael Eklund fan. He made Bobo so damn likable.
“Nobody f*cks with our family,” Nedley proclaims to Wynonna. I think it’s safe to assume that this line is spoken right after the ending of Season 3. Side note: I’m looking forward to more Nedley. Here’s hoping he gets some much-deserved time in the limelight. Then, we’re gifted with some killer one-liners from our core crew. Wynonna suiting up with her guns (no Peacemaker) and ready to take on demons. Doc shouting, “Vacation’s over, a**holes!” and delivering a hefty punch. “I’m gonna kick so much ass, I might go up a shoe size,” says Waverly. God, I missed these characters.
Then, there’s another slew of quick shots that definitely required some pausing on my end. One is Nicole shooting what appears to be a squirt gun alongside Doc. Waverly mounting a serious blow. Two of our crew donning hazmat suits and going to town on something. And…a naked Nicole? I can’t wait to learn the story behind that scene.
Next, Wynonna is recklessly brandishing a fancy laser gun. Jeremy (Varun Saranga) admonishes her for being careless with it. “Don’t point that at anything unless you want it guac-ed,” he says. Of course, Wynonna trails off on a tangent about how she wants nachos. Wynonna is my Queen. Then, we’re blessed with a cameo from Mercedes (Dani Kind), who’s dancing sultrily on a stage. Remember last season when she was on Team Bulshar? Again, this is another scene wherein I’m excited to learn its backstory. I mean, I get it — a girl needs to earn a living.
“We’re going to make our little town a demon-free zone once and for all,” Wynonna claims. Now, one thing I noticed during some of these quick snaps was a peculiar demon. He doesn’t look like a typical Revenant. The trailer does mention that new creatures take Purgatory by storm, so maybe this demon is one of them? “Clear eyes, full bra, can’t lose,” Wynonna says. I can already tell that Season 4 may boast some of Wynonna’s best quips yet. “Okay, Jon Snow in a B-cup,” Valdez remarks. This is the only scene in the trailer where she speaks and I can already tell she fits right in with our crew.
Next, we hear more narration from Wynonna urging her team to slay some demons. There are plenty of action sequences jammed in here — Nicole and Valdez poised with rifles, running toward something. Wynonna hurtling toward a wall while inside what looks like a garage. More footage of Wynonna smacking the snot out of demons.
Then, there’s a shot of Waverly screaming for Wynonna. She’s bound in chains. Now, if anyone misplaces even a single strand of angel hair on her angel head, I may lose it. Lastly, we see Wynonna being held at gunpoint by a horde of soldiers in her barn. She mentions, sardonically, how it’s “good to be home.”

So, Wynonna mentions how she’s happy to be home not once, but twice in this trailer. Is this in reference to wherever she ventures to while saving Waverly, Doc, and all of Purgatory? Could all of the aforementioned parties be in the same place? Or plot twist: maybe Wynonna disappears. Perhaps the story is actually flipped. I highly doubt it, but a girl can foolishly speculate.
Maybe this trailer felt elevated because we went almost two years without Wynonna Earp. Length of time aside, this is legitimately one of the best TV trailers I’ve seen. There’s material aplenty rife for dissection while still presenting new questions for audiences to mull over. One thing I detest is when a show or movie crams all of its best scenes into one trailer. Thankfully, Wynonna Earp isn’t that show or movie. Andras and co. know how to effectively entice viewers without revealing their entire hand.
In conclusion: great new one-liners. Awesome action sequences. New scenes that pose more questions than answers. I’m so immensely pumped for Season 4, Earpers. By the looks of this trailer, the stakes are higher than ever for our sh*tshow. As usual, the pervasive familial theme is ever-present. Our Purgatory gang is definitely a tight-knit family. July 26th can’t come soon enough.
