Earpers, our sh*t show is finally back, with a — wait for it — vengeance. Wynonna Earp: Vengeance delivers a heaping helping of delightful chaos and cheeky one-liners, along with a peek behind the curtain at what our favorite characters have been up to since Season 4. Of course, it’s not Wynonna Earp without a dose of gut-punching emotion to accompany the laughs. This special runs the gamut of emotions and bends genres in the best way.

To celebrate the return of our crazy chick with a gun and her posse of dipsh*ts, I’ve compiled a list of 36 Easter eggs from Vengeance that reference the main series. Obviously, spoilers abound, so proceed at your peril.

Whatever You Do, Don’t Touch the Goo

In the opening moments of Vengeance, the infamous black goo returns, infiltrating the mortal world via Nedley’s (Greg Lawson) ice-fishing trailer.

If you recall, said goo, called Mictian, possesses Waverly (Dom Provost-Chalkley) in the Season 1 finale, “I Walk the Line,” transforming her into “Gooverly.” It also takes hold of Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano); thus, “Goononna” is born. The goo reappears in the special when Mina (Karen Knox) awakens Dark Waverly to do her bidding and find the other bracelet.

Nedley and His Gun

Remember the Season 3 finale, “War Paint,” when Nedley cocks his gun (not a euphemism; I know how fond this show is of dick jokes) after Wynonna declares they should save their friends? Nedley has a similar moment at the beginning of Vengeance when squaring off against Mina. He cocks his gun and orders “Lock Mess” to pick on him instead of Mercedes (Dani Kind). In his words, “Nobody f*cks with our family.”

Wynonna’s Theme

Almost five minutes into the special, Wynonna’s theme plays, specifically when Mina talks about luring the Earp heir back to Purgatory by “baiting the hook.” Of course, she kills Mercedes, the second-best angler there ever was and will be. RIP to a baddie.

Tell That Devil

Earpers far and wide can recognize Jill Andrews’ “Tell That Devil” by the opening strums of that acoustic guitar. It’s iconic. Needless to say, it wouldn’t be Wynonna Earp without this needle drop. After Mecedes’ murder, we see our titular gunslinger sauntering through the casino in Tombstone to the tune.

The Ear Pull

The security guard grabbing Wynonna’s ear as she complains about not getting to cheat is a sly nod to Waverly pulling Wynonna by the ear in Season 4 Episode 12, “Old Souls.” Someone, protect poor Wynonna’s ears!

All the Mexican Food Wordplay

Lafferty (Andrew Bushell) informs Wynonna that she’s “one chips and guac away from a free chalupa.” “You asshole. That’s na-chos to take,” she replies. This is a fun nod to Wynonna’s “Guaca-cuse me?” to Nicole in Season 3 Episode 7, “I Fall to Pieces.” Additionally, Wynonna referring to Lafferty as “this guac of sh*t” later in Vengeance calls back to the aforementioned line.

Texas Hold’em

The poster in Paco Daisy’s (Julian Black Antelope) casino features Wynonna’s relative, Wyatt Earp, and mentions the showdown at the O.K. Corral. We dove deeper into the O.K. Corral event in Season 4 with the Clanton storyline.

27

“Can’t take a beating like when I was 27,” Wynonna says after getting punched in the face. This refers to the age at which she becomes the Earp heir in the series premiere, “Purgatory.”

Character Appearances, the Stairs (Wink-Wink) and More

Around 10 minutes into Vengeance, we reunite with memorable supporting characters, such as Chrissie Nedley (Dana Christina), Freddie (Orin McCusker) and Bunny Loblaw (Jann Arden). And, of course, who can forget Jeremy Chetri (Varun Saranga), aka our Jer-bear? Although, I consider him to be a main character.

How Does One Describe Wynonna Earp?

“Wynonna Earp. Crazy chick with a demon-killing gun,” our titular Peacemaker-wielder declares to Paco. If you recall, in Season 1 Episode 2, “Keep the Home Fires Burning,” Wynonna yells out, “Crazy chick with a gun!” in a club while on a mission with Dolls (Shamier Anderson). This quote has become an endearing part of the fandom.

Hunting Demons Requires Sharp Sartorial Taste

Listen, I may or may not have squealed when Wynonna reached for her iconic leather jacket before booking it back to Purgatory. Black leather jacket, buckled boots, Peacemaker, whiskey, doughnuts — it’s the Wynonna starter pack.

You Bring the Doughnuts

When Wynonna returns to the Homestead and is greeted by WayHaught, Nicole (Katherine Barrell) asks if she brought doughnuts. It’s a delightful nod to Wynonna’s two favorite food groups: whiskey and doughnuts.

Baby Girl and Baby Girl’s Woman

Wynonna calls Waves “baby girl” throughout the main series. Admittedly, hearing her say this hit me in the heart in the best way. Then, there’s “baby girl’s woman,” aka Wynonna’s best friend (no takebacks), Nicole.

Welcome Home, Wynonna

I loved this reference to the ardent fan campaign to save the show and how it was organically woven into the dialogue here. Waverly says this to our girl after she returns to Purgatory.

That’s Not on the Chore Wheel

“Since you’re renovating, I’d also redo the stairs,” Wynonna suggests to Waverly and Nicole as she tours the renovated Homestead. Of course, this is a nod to the steamy WayHaught reunion scene in Season 4 Episode 2, “Friends in Low Places,” wherein Nicole and Waverly have sex on the stairs. Nope, that part of the house should remain untouched. It’s perfect as it is.

Deez Nuts

At Mercedes’ fabulous wake, Wynonna almost blurts out that she’s kept the town safe from demons. Waverly interrupts to finish her sister’s sentence, saying, “Deez nuts.” It’s a reference to Season 4 Episode 8, “Hell Raisin’ Good Time.” In the episode, our Earp sisters lose their memories. Waverly believes she’s a cop and yells the hilarious phrase in Shorty’s.

Identity, BFFs and Sh*t-Tickets, Oh My

Wynonna defends Waverly after Jasmine (Rosie Simon) calls the younger Earp sister a “lesbian,” saying, “She’s bisexual, you muppet!” This is a nod to Nicole correcting Bunny when the latter refers to Waverly and Nicole as lesbians in Season 4 Episode 7, “Love’s All Over.” At the time, our Waves identified as bi, but in Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, she informs Wynonna that she identifies as pan. We love our pansexual angel.

Wynonna’s Best Friend

“You’re Wynonna Earp’s best friend,” Mina says to Nicole during their battle in the sheriff’s office. If you’ve watched the show, you know Wynonna and Nicole are BFFs. No takebacks.

WayHaught Cake Topper

If you look closely at the beginning of the Earp sisters fireplace scene, you’ll see the Waverly and Nicole cake topper from their wedding in “Old Souls.”

Parallels

Speaking of that fireplace scene, it’s a fun parallel to Season 3 Episode 10, “The Other Woman,” wherein our eponymous gunslinger and Waves sit in front of the fireplace, the latter with a stylish oven mitt.

A Villainous Mention

During the flashback scene in the barn, young Wynonna mentions Sheriff Clootie (Jean Marchand), aka Bulshar, while the Dawson’s Freaks are casting a spell. Bulshar is the central foe in Season 3.

Agent Xavier Dolls

Doc (Tim Rozon) references the late Dolls while he shows Lafferty our crew’s Black Badge weapons cache. “I hid the munitions out here after I liberated them from an old friend. He, too, was from Arizona,” Doc explains. Aw, my heart. I miss Dolls.

Target Practice

Immediately after the Dolls nod, Doc and Lafferty partake in competitive target practice, reminiscent of him demonstrating his sharp-shooting abilities to Wynonna in Season 1 Episode 4, “The Blade.”

A Classic Waverly Earp Insult

There’s nothing like a good Waverly Earp insult. It’s a balm for us non-angelic souls. In Vengeance, Waverly calls Mina a “sh*t-ticket.” This isn’t the first time we’ve heard her use the term. In fact, it goes as far back as “Keep the Home Fires Burning.” Then, in Season 1 Episode 11, “Landslide,” Waverly blesses us with the iconic “Eat sh*t, sh*t-eaters!”

Sittin’ in the Dark

“The affairs of men are no longer my concern,” Waverly declares in Vengeance after Mina gives our gal a hefty dose of black goo. My interpretation is Mina unlocks Dark Waverly, who we meet in Season 4 Episode 11, “Better Dig Two.” She says this line verbatim in that episode.

My Nedley

Wynonna refers to Nedley as “my Nedley” when reuniting with Mina (after driving her legendary truck). This feels like a nod to her line in Season 2 Episode 10, “I See a Darkness,” wherein she yells at Widow Mercedes, “Give me my Nedley!” before saving him.

Waverly wears winter gear while standing outside on a snowy day. She smiles at Wynonna, whose back is turned.

The Well

During the emotional porch scene, Doc tells Wynonna that he understands firsthand what it’s like to sit in the dark with nothing but your thoughts. That can manifest some gnarled, twisted motivations. This references his 130 years trapped in a well courtesy of Constance Clootie (Rayisa Kondracki), who utilized her magic to keep him there (and ageless/immortal). Upon emerging from the well at the beginning of the series, he has only revenge on his mind.

That’s Everybody’s Thing

The cheerleader outfit strikes again. When Waverly and Nicole clean up the craft room, the latter mourns the destruction of Waves’ custom crocheted cheerleading cosplay. In Season 2 Episode 3, “Gonna Getcha Good,” Waverly performs a routine in her cheerleader uniform for Nicole.

Trapped in the GRT

“I wish I could be the one to show you the world,” Nicole says to Waverly in the special. For the uninitiated, this is a nod to Nicole being the Angel’s Shield, sworn to protect the Ghost River Triangle in Waverly’s place. Her assuming this role means she’s bound to the GRT and can’t leave under any circumstances. This makes Waverly departing for Egypt a bittersweet affair — I’m glad she’s spreading her wings (hee-hee) but wish her wife could accompany her.

Ward and Willa

Before the big fight with Mina’s hellhounds, Wynonna visits her father, Ward, and older sister Willa’s gravesite. There, she gets a pep talk from her Nedley. I’m glad the special references Wynonna and Waverly’s family, as Ward and Willa play a significant role in Season 1 (and our titular heroine’s growth).

The Couple Who Shoots Together…

Waverly and Nicole shooting the hellhounds during the third act is reminiscent of the steamy stakeout scene in Season 3 Episode 1, “Blood Red and Going Down.” It’s simple math: WayHaught + guns = a boatload of cute flirting.

Flashbacks

When Wynonna falls through the ice-fishing hole into Hell (it’s giving Hellmouth vibes), we see flashbacks from the series, from Doc claiming he knows Peacemaker and Wynonna giving birth to Alice to Waverly saying, “This is your home” to her big sister in the Season 4 finale.

Make Your Peace (or Don’t)

Wynonna whips out her iconic catchphrase, “Make your peace,” while incessantly shooting Mina in the head in Hell. Well, some demons are incapable of making their peace, even with Peacemaker aimed squarely between their dark, beady eyes.

“I Am All In”

We see “Bonafide All In” etched into Doc’s headstone as Wynonna informs Jeremy that she buried the entrapped Mina and Peacemaker with him. “All in” references “I am all in,” which Doc tells a pregnant Wynonna via a note in Season 2 Episode 6, “Whiskey Lullaby.”

Love a Good Suit

Waverly departs for Egypt in a burgundy suit, much like the one Nicole wears on their wedding day in “Old Souls.” Admittedly, this made me giddy. How cute.

Everyone Welcome

The final shot in Vengeance zooms in on the Earp mailbox, with the signage “And Haught,” “Sometimes Holliday” and “Everyone Welcome.” This is a delightful nod to the final shot in the Season 4 finale. However, there’s an addition — “But Demons Please Knock.”
