WYNONNA EARP Season Finale Recap Part 1: (S03E11) Daddy Lessons

Melody McCune

DISCLAIMER: This Wynonna Earp recap of “Daddy Lessons” contains more spoilers than the number of times the Earp sisters have attempted to evade capture. Everyone wants an Earp these days. You’ve been warned. Make your peace, and enter at your own peril.

Welcome back, Earpers! Wynonna Earp‘s penultimate episode was chock full of revelations galore. Not to mention it was the perfect setup for the grand finale. Probably one of the biggest twists in the series’ history was discovering Waverly’s true parentage. As it turned out, Charlie was actually Julian all along! Which means that Wynonna…yep. She did the horizontal tango with her sister’s angelic father. Several times. Oh, and Wynonna’s mother also boinked him. All in the family, I guess? Next big plot twist: Wynonna learned how to circumvent the “Waverly sacrificial snafu.” Wynonna must physically touch Bulshar. Should be no biggie, right?

Alright, ready to delve into “Daddy Lessons?” Just be sure to keep a bottle of whiskey handy for this. You’re going to need some magical liquid for your potentially frazzled nerves.

We open with Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) standing over Charlie’s (Sebastian Pigott) body in the morgue. Both halves of WayHaught are pondering over how to broach the subject to Wynonna – you know, that her former lover slaughtered her current lover. Nicole is called away on police business, so Waverly is left standing solo over the deceased fireman. She reaches out a hand and touches his neck. Suddenly, Charlie opens his eyes and bolts upright, breathing new air into his lungs. Well, that escalated quickly! As it turns out, Waves’ magical ring can also revive people from the dead. Good to know.

Then, we see Nicole and Robin (Justin Kelly) hard at work on evacuating all of Purgatory’s residents. Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) drives toward them and asks if they know of Waverly’s whereabouts. Of course, Nicole just left her at the morgue, but our Earp heir reveals that Waves is nowhere to be found. Suddenly, the light bulb goes off in Wynonna’s head and she drives off to some unknown destination, hellbent on tracking down her sister.

Later, Wynonna discovers her sister hiding out in the woods. Waverly is utterly spooked (and rightfully so) by her latest miracle. Waverly is lingering near the ancient staircase to Paradise. Of course, Wynonna still doesn’t see the dilapidated staircase. She urges Waves not to do anything stupid, such as ascending the invisible staircase and sacrificing herself for all of humanity. Thus, desperate times call for desperate measures, such as knocking your sister unconscious. Wynonna gives Waves a mean fist to the face, knocking the latter out cold. Don’t mess with the heir, Earpers!

Next, Wynonna returns to the town proper with Waverly bound and sealed inside the box in her truck bed. She convinces Nicole that whisking Waverly out of Purgatory should be top priority. The duo spots a bewildered Charlie meandering toward them, barefoot. Nicole is taken aback to see the fireman living and breathing, but Wynonna is none the wiser to his previous state. Wynonna asks Charlie to do her a huge solid – he must drive Waverly as far away from Purgatory as possible. He agrees to do this.

Meanwhile, Doc (Tim Rozon) glamours a pair of townies inside Shorty’s. His thirst for blood has been overwhelming since he feasted on Charlie. Kate (Chantel Riley) enters the bar and finds Doc with his soon-to-be dinner course in the basement. Well, perhaps one is dinner and the other is dessert. Kate is shocked that Doc taught himself how to glamour. She’s also taken aback by his uninhibited embrace of the vampire lifestyle. Both husband and wife drain their shared meal dry. Those who drink together, stay together.

Later, Bobo Del Rey (Michael Eklund) finds himself with unexpected visitors inside the police station. His former Revenant buddies decide to raid the station of all its weaponry. Bobo desperately pleads with them to release him. He even offers up critical information regarding Wynonna – she’s without Peacemaker. This gives the Revenants an idea. Unfortunately, Bobo’s information share did not win him a ticket to freedom. The Revenants leave him to rot inside his glass box. Oh, Bobo. Ever the flip-flopper. Like a politician, Bobo will only tell you what you want to hear.

Next, the Revenants find Wynonna shoring up some weapons of her own, sans Peacemaker as Bobo said. They capture her and decide to offer her up as a nice present to Bulshar. These baddies hope to curry favor with the baddest of them all. Here’s hoping our girl will get out of this one!

Meanwhile, Charlie inadvertently takes Waverly to the Gibson greenhouse. Strange. We notice that exotic flowers begin to blossom within the greenhouse, where it appeared that none would ever do so again. This started the moment the pair entered said greenhouse. No, this isn’t strange at all. To wile away their time, Waverly asks Charlie of his upbringing. Charlie reveals that he doesn’t remember anything prior to moving to Purgatory. Waverly touches his hand with the ring. Suddenly, all of his memories come rushing back. Not only that, but Waverly is privy to his memories as well. The pieces are falling together, Earpers!

Later, Doc and Kate arrive at the fire station. Doc is set on hunting down Charlie. He craves the fireman’s delectable blood. He asks the fire chief to reveal Charlie’s whereabouts. Unfortunately for Doc, the chief is playing hardball. The chief finally relents and gives up Charlie’s coordinates. However, Doc shoots the chief and Kate in the process. Don’t give in to the darkness, Doc! You’re better than this!

Next, we see that Wynonna is trussed up in some Revenant’s dead wife’s gown. From the 1800s. She’s brought to Bulshar’s (Jean Marchand) lair, where the soiree to end all soirees is being held. Mercedes (Dani Kind) is also present, acting as Bulshar’s sidepiece. Wynonna is disappointed that Mercedes would side with the enemy, but the latter is merely trying to save face. Literally, she doesn’t want to lose her face again.

Now, Bulshar asks his minions if anyone would like to volunteer to be on the front lines with him. Wynonna volunteers as tribute for the privilege. She cites that she only wishes to keep her family safe, and if that means siding with Bulshar will ensure their safety, then so be it. Initially, Bulshar raucously laughs in her face. However, as Wynonna physically draws ever closer to him, he panics and has her thrown in a cell. Strange…

Meanwhile, Waverly and Charlie hear that Doc is outside the greenhouse. The pair dives under a picnic table to conceal themselves from the gunslinger vampire. Charlie realizes that he’s been in the greenhouse before. We see another memory of a young Mama Earp with none other than Charlie himself. Charlie is Julian! He’s Waverly’s father! Which means that Waverly’s sister and her mother have horizontally tangoed with the same man. Not weird at all. This also explains why Doc is so addicted to Charlie’s angel blood.

Later, while inside her cage, Wynonna realizes that her physical touch is enough to take out Bulshar. How ironic that the very curse he created is also capable of killing him. She convinces an on-the-fence Revenant and Mercedes to aid her in escaping her cage. Wynonna updates her Victorian garb so it’s far easier to fight in.

Next, Doc barges into the greenhouse and physically threatens Waverly. He demands she reveal Charlie’s location. Apparently, this version of Doc is not above hurting someone he loves very much. Charlie steps in to protect his daughter and uses his angelic strength to knock Doc unconscious. Waverly is shocked by his powers. Suddenly, a pair of massive wings materializes on Charlie’s back. They extend to fill the space around father and daughter. Whoa…

Now, Wynonna fights off the Revenants loyal to Bulshar and is able to rally the rest to her side. Surprising that her enemies will now be her allies against a common evil. Together, they all face down Bulshar. However, with the help of his remaining supporters, Bulshar vanishes into thin air. Just like a coward to run away.

Then, we see Wynonna, Mercedes and her Revenant allies marching down central Purgatory toward Bulshar. Time to put the Serpent away once and for all!

Meanwhile, Doc wakes up in the greenhouse to find that Charlie and Waverly are no longer present. He finds a wrapped sword lying in the remnants of a smashed angel statue. Doc is still lusting after Charlie’s blood, and it appears he will continue his quest to hunt the angel down.

Next, Bulshar pays Bobo a visit at the police station. Bobo has been abandoned by his Revenant buddies, and Bulshar has lost lackeys himself. He enlists in Bobo’s help, and Bobo heartily accepts. Bobo is now Bulshar’s man. Uh oh. This won’t end well…

Wynonna Earp never fails to entertain. This season has been a whirlwind of revelations and twists. The series is in top form, and it seems to have found its groove. Of course, with the biblical mythology there’s so much to explore story wise. Scrofano continues to outperform more well-known actors, and I sincerely hope she gets her break soon. Rozon’s turn as Doc this season has also been exciting to watch.

Do you think we’ll see Mama Earp in the final episode of Season 3? Will Wynonna get Peacemaker back? Can Doc ever be redeemed after his attempt at harming Waves? Join me as I recap the season finale, here on Geek Girl Authority.

Wynonna Earp airs Fridays at 9pm on your SyFy affiliate.
