DISCLAIMER: This recap of Wynonna Earp episode “Afraid” is rife with spoilers galore. You’ve been warned. Proceed with caution.

Welcome back, Earpers! This week, Wynonna Earp took a horrific turn with its latest installment. Typically, I’m not easily frightened when I watch horror movies, but “Afraid” sure ramped the scary up a notch. This episode was stuffed to the gills with plenty of plot twists and the resurgence of an Earp foe. Said foe may be one of Wynonna’s most formidable yet. Nicole and Waverly are apparently determined to do the horizontal tango in every room at the Homestead, and I’m all for this challenge. Doc cavorted with a perpetually-stuck-in-the-80s demon. Oh, and Sheriff Clayburn and Cleo the Magistrate? They’re only two members of the Earp’s arch nemesis — the Clantons. That explains Cleo’s vitriolic hatred of Wynonna. Wynonna brought Jeremy the Nerd back into the posse of dipsh*ts. My heart is fit to burst.

Ready to delve into “Afraid?” Let’s get to it.

Now, we open with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) being kidnapped and led to a nondescript location. A blonde woman named Naomi (Reagan Pasternak) introduces herself as a Black Badge lackey. Yes, the once defunct paranormal investigative branch is now…funct. Naturally, Wynonna’s guard is up. Jeremy (Varun Saranga) appears, much to Wynonna’s delight. Naomi has no idea that Wynonna is the Earp heir and she incessantly mispronounces her last name as “Arp.” Jeremy informs Naomi that Wynonna has never killed a demon (Huh?). Clearly, Jeremy withheld the truth from BBD to protect Wynonna.

Next, we see someone spilling blood on a photo of Wynonna atop a tower of stones. Then, the rattling of chains, a guttural, ferocious growl…basically, something scary is waiting in the wings. And its target is obviously Wynonna.

Later, Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) is with Nicole (Kat Barrell) in the kitchen. Waves has prepared the PowerPoint presentation to end all PowerPoint presentations. A summation of everything they currently know and questions hanging in the air. Wynonna and Doc are AWOL. Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis) barges into the kitchen donning Wynonna’s famous leather jacket and then proceeds to flee the scene. So much for the gang meetup. Instead, Waves and Nicole decide that doing the beast with two backs would be a more productive and prudent use of their time. I wholeheartedly agree.

Meanwhile, Naomi tries to persuade Wynonna to join Black Badge again. They’re not that evil — only a little on Friday nights. Black Badge’s new objective is to solely observe the demons. No killing allowed. Oh, and they set a perimeter around the Ghost River Triangle, keeping the demons trapped within alongside humans. A great idea and not at all stupid. Jeremy decides to give Wynonna a tour of the facility. Wynonna finds a rock in her pocket with a “C” etched into it. She assumes it’s some sort of Black Badge tracking device and passes it off to a guard.

Then, we see Doc (Tim Rozon) has returned to The Glory Hole. Aemon (Noam Jenkins) saunters over all slick-like and hands Doc an envelope containing, presumably, money. He reassures Doc that the latter is safe at his establishment. Free to be you and me. Aemon has his best bartender pour Doc a glass of their finest blood. Oh, and if Doc returns empty-handed, there will be hell to pay. Not-so-subtle threats are fun!

Later, Rachel meets up with a kid named Billy (Billy Bryk) at an abandoned restaurant. Apparently, they generate income by foraging for items and selling them. One man’s trash, after all. Billy tries to make a move on Rachel, but she recoils. Out of pure nervousness, presumably. Ah, teenage love. So hormonal. As they’re walking back to their respective homes, Rachel invites herself over to his place for dinner. However, Billy doesn’t want Rachel seeing his digs. Hey, it’s all about what’s inside, buddy. And if you have a Keurig.

Next, Waves and Nicole are quite parched for some homemade kombucha after another roll in the hay. Waverly broaches the idea of searching for Peacemaker. Then, she asserts that she meant every word she said to Nicole prior to the Bulshar showdown. About marriage. However, Rachel walks in on them sprawled out across the kitchen floor in nothing save a bed sheet. I love this running joke of people walking in on WayHaught. Rachel reveals that she knows where to look for Peacemaker — a junkyard!

Meanwhile, Wynonna suits up for her first official mission back with BBD. Jeremy arms her with Antony — a massive laser gun with the ability to enact an apocalypse. Or divert one. Her objective? Find out who’s stealing their supplies. Said supplies are meant to be delivered into town for Purgatory’s residents. However, Jeremy explicitly urges Wynonna not to kill anything or anyone. She’s simply observing. That’s not Earp’s style, dude.

Then, Waves, Nicole, and Rachel drive to said junkyard. We learn that Billy lives there. Waverly has a run-in with a scary looking demon dude that she apparently can’t see. Even Nicole doesn’t spot the creature. A woman named Mam (Paula Boudreau) assertively orders the pair not to touch anything. That’s when they ask her if she has a sword in her possession. Rachel meanders off to find Billy.

Next, Wynonna calls Waves after she finds yet another rock in her pocket marked with the same letter. Jeremy reveals that it’s not BBD tech, so she asks Waverly to delve into some research. Wynonna’s partner is a truck driver and boy, does he despise Purgatory. Wynonna asserts that only Purgatorians are allowed to defecate all over Purgatory. It may be a sh*thole, but it’s our sh*thole.

Meanwhile, as Wynonna and her surly partner drive through the snow-riddled countryside, one of the tires to the truck goes out. We hear some rustling in the back of said truck. While Wynonna’s driver makes a run for it, our girl brandishes her fancy new laser gun and finds none other than Doc attempting to rob the supply truck. What a small world!

Now, Rachel finds Billy doing his nails or something. Slow business day at the junkyard. He politely tells her to make like a tree and leaf. His reason? He cites that his mother, Mam, won’t be too fond of his relationship with Rachel. Rachel storms off, believing that Billy doesn’t reciprocate her feelings. Ah, teenage love. So hormonal. She asks Nicole and Waves to take her home, and they acquiesce. Mam vows to keep an eye out for a sword. Oh, and she knows Nicole. That’s not shady at all.

Then, Wynonna and Doc bicker about their alliances. Doc is upset that Wynonna is succumbing to BBD’s antics. Wynonna is irritated that Doc is working for a demon. Hey, we all have our flaws. Now, kiss and make up. Wynonna handcuffs herself to the very crate that Doc is attempting to steal. He decides to leave her alone while he grabs tools from his car.

Later, we see it’s getting dark outside. Wynonna finds yet another cryptic “C” rock in her pocket. She starts hearing inexplicable noises coupled with a nasty howling wind. She also spots a pair of feet entangled in chains as they shuffle across the roof of the truck. Not creepy at all. Suddenly, the creature from Mam’s junkyard slowly pokes his head inside the truck. Instantly, Wynonna senses something familiar with this creature, as if she knows him. And he sure knows her. Wynonna screams for Doc.

Next, Billy finds Rachel in the Earp barn. He forlornly reveals that they can’t see each other anymore. In a previous scene, we saw that Mam threatened to hurt Rachel if Billy didn’t end things with her. Thus, Billy took action. Rachel procures the same elusive rock from her jacket pocket. Well, Wynonna’s jacket. That’s when Billy realizes that she’s been marked, and a reaper will be coming after her. Back inside the house, Waverly is steeped in research. After combing through book after book, she stumbles upon a cattle branding symbol — the letter “C.” As it turns out, said brand represents the surname “Clanton.” The Clantons are ancient enemies of the Earps.

Then, Waves and Nicole rush to the barn when they hear Rachel scream. Meanwhile, Wynonna is able to escape her handcuffs courtesy of the creature. Unfortunately, he promptly slices her laser gun in half like a knife through butter. Wynonna makes a break for it. However, her journey comes to an end when she becomes entrapped in a barrier. We see a slew of rock piles are keeping her within. Now the creature is peering at her through a copse of trees. All spooky-like. Thankfully, Doc finds her. At this point, Wynonna is utterly terrified. In fact, this is the most terrified I’ve ever seen her. Doc attempts to shoot the creature at Wynonna’s urgent behest, despite the fact that he can’t see it.

After a while, Wynonna and Doc manage to put a few bullets through ol’ Spooky. Said bullets knock him down…but he’s not out. Spooky gets right back up again. So, bullets apparently don’t work.

Meanwhile, Billy performs impromptu dental work and removes something from his mouth. He performs some sort of sacrificial ritual to divert the reaper from Rachel. Praise be to Andras, the ritual works. The reaper hunting Wynonna, having received his fill of sacrifices, retreats. But, little does Billy know that the reaper marked Wynonna, not Rachel.

Next, the gang regroups at the Homestead. Waverly reveals that the Clantons are behind all this. Oh, and Clayburn and Cleo are Billy’s siblings. A family affair! Rachel wants blood, so she storms off to save Billy. Wynonna urges the team to bring Jeremy back into the fold. We need our nerd back!

Then, we see Mam has Billy chained up. She’s disappointed in him for inadvertently saving Wynonna from the reaper. He urges her to leave Rachel alone. That’s when she reveals that she won’t harm a hair on Rachel’s head…but Billy will. Suddenly, the reaper attacks Billy. All we hear are bloodcurdling screams.

Now, we see Clayburn (Ty Olsson) and Cleo (Savannah Basley) are inside with Mam. They listen to Billy’s screams from outside. Cleo attempts to undermine Mam’s authority, to which the latter responds with a quick and painful reprimanding. We learn that Mam is the Clanton heir. She has an intricate plan in motion to make the Earps pay…and then some. Oh, and the reapers? Their ancestors! The Clanton trio say a weirdly demonic prayer prior to eating dinner.

Next, Wynonna barges into BBD. She reveals that she’s “Wynonna F*cking Earp” and she’s killed a ton of demons. Oh, and Jeremy is coming with her. Additionally, she tells Naomi that she must reinstate her posse of dipsh*ts as Black Badge agents. Things are going to be done the Earp way from here on out. Naomi acquiesces, but she reveals that her bosses are as formidable as formidable can be.

Lastly, Nicole pays Mam a visit. Apparently, she utilized Mam’s services to save Waverly and Doc from the Garden. However, the pair ended up getting themselves out of that twisted paradise. But Mam is insistent on Nicole paying up. So, she releases what appears to be a swarm of locusts, which overtake Nicole’s body. Another possession? Bring it on!

Holy guacamole, Antony! Wynonna Earp is firing on all cylinders this season. This intriguing new story line is a breath of fresh air. I still believe that the hiatus actually did the show a world of good. Not that it was getting stale, but it’s always kosher to keep that innovative flow going. I dug the marked rocks as a form of “reaping.” What a genuinely creative approach for a villain to utilize. Now, the teenage love story didn’t do it for me, mostly because we’ve seen the “star-crossed lovers” angle countless times. However, the episode still rocked my socks off. Not-so-side note: Scrofano executed the “terrified Wynonna” scene to perfection. Her acting chops are choppier than ever.

What do you think possessed Nicole? What’s Mam’s next step in Operation: Take Down the Earps? Where the fork is Eve? Join me next week as I recap Wynonna Earp, here on Geek Girl Authority.
