DISCLAIMER: This recap of Wynonna Earp episode “Friends in Low Places” is rife with spoilers galore. You’ve been warned. Proceed with caution.
Welcome back, Earpers! Wynonna Earp has blessed us with another bonkers episode this week. If you thought the premiere was extra levels of Earp, then hold on to your butts for “Friends in Low Places.” WayHaught lovers’ appetites have been sated. Call it a thirst well quenched. We also learned that Eve was imprisoned in the Garden and she required human blood to stay put. Unfortunately, Doc inadvertently set her loose on Purgatory. Speaking of, Wynonna, Doc, and Waverly returned to Earth after 18 months of being in the Garden. Talk about a time jump!
Ready to delve into “Friends in Low Places?” Let’s get to it.
Now, we open with Nicole (Kat Barrell) standing in nothing but her birthday suit. Doc (Tim Rozon) finds her within the stone structure that’s housing the elusive monster that requires human blood. But why is she naked? Nicole seems foggy regarding the details. Doc goes to fetch Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), who’s sitting in the desolate snowy tundra of the Garden. She’s perusing the book she snatched earlier. Unfortunately, it’s still unclear as to which book she grabbed.
Meanwhile, back at the zombie-laden abandoned Black Badge facility, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) is shouting after Nicole who fell through a grate in the last episode. Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis) tells Wynonna she knows of a different route to the lower levels. Along the way to Nicole, the pair bond over their inherent weirdness. They also attempt to forge a personal handshake, but they can’t decide on whether a fist bump is a good opening move or not. Awkward weird people, unite!
Next, Waverly makes her way to Nicole. Now, there’s a cherry blossom tree towering over Nicole. Nicole is still bereft of clothes. Initially, Doc tried to toss his coat to Nicole, but there’s an invisible barrier blocking her from the outside. Like a prison of sorts. Waverly, like Doc, is also bewildered as to how Nicole found her way inside the Garden. Again, Nicole proffers a vague answer…
…because the real Nicole is still in the Black Badge building! She’s alive albeit in a lot of pain from, you know, falling a few floors through a metal grate. Not only that, but a zombie is slowly crawling his way toward the injured Nicole. Good fun!
Then, Rachel informs Wynonna that they must don hazmat suits and a mask while passing through a gateway to Dr. Valdez’s lab. They’ll also need to swipe a key card from one of the deadies. Easy peasy, right?
Meanwhile, Waverly looks apprehensive while talking to “Nicole” in the Garden. This version of Nicole is becoming increasingly passive aggressive. Methinks she’s starting to realize that she’s not speaking with her Nicole.
Next, we see Rachel and Wynonna passing through a slew of slumbering zombies. Wynonna loses oxygen, so she starts to go loopy. She’s gyrating and smacking zombies on the head. Well — this is more like a typical Friday night for our crazy chick without a gun. Now, back in the Garden, “Nicole” fashions herself clothing out of cherry blossom limbs. This all screams “Eve in the Garden of Eden with the tree of Knowledge.” And Colonel Mustard in the library with the pipe wrench. I know my Bible stuff.
Thankfully, Wynonna and Rachel get to the real Nicole before Mr. Zombie-Wants-Brains takes a bite out of her. Doc is about to feed the Garden monster more blood until he spots a door open of its own accord. Naturally curious, we crosses its threshold. Doc finds what appears to be an onyx sculpture of sorts. He spots Nicole’s face on one side…and a nefarious-looking beast on the other. He quickly realizes that our Waves is alone with a monster masquerading as Nicole.
Meanwhile, Wynonna shows the real Nicole Julian’s ring. Nicole reveals that she’s going to say “yes” to Waves’ marriage proposal. WayHaught wedding for Season 4! Make it so! Suddenly, in the Garden, the barrier containing “Nicole” is broken. She crosses the floor and swipes Doc’s coat. Then, she scurries off with Waverly in tow. Once the two are topside, Waverly pulls Nicole in for a kiss. However, she soon realizes that Nicole isn’t Nicole; her kiss tastes like sulfur. Doc runs toward them and urges Waves to get away from “Nicole.” That’s when we learn that her real name is Eve and she’s looking to get the hell out of dodge. Boom!
Later, Rachel finally finds her mother. Unfortunately, Dr. Gloria Valdez is very much dead. Wynonna tries to figure out how to get in the Garden, but Rachel impedes her from doing so. The young girl brandishes a gun and asserts that nobody is getting access to the Garden, especially since her mother died to keep the portal closed.
Next, Eve drags Waverly about and does the usual villainous stuff — talks too much and chokes her. Eve reveals that the snake (Bulshar) failed to get in, but Waves and Doc succeeded in getting her out. Yay? Doc throws in a punch. Suddenly, Eve transforms into “Jeremy (Varun Saranga).” Uh oh. Eve’s quite the shapeshifter. After some punches and kicks, Doc procures some garden shears and drives them through “Jeremy.” That’s when Eve morphs into “Wynonna.” As a way of craftily manipulating Doc, of course. Waverly realizes that she’s destined to sit on her father’s throne. It’s the only way to ensure that Eve never escapes the Garden. Waverly touches Doc’s face, which burns his skin and promptly knocks him unconscious.
Finally, Wynonna persuades Rachel to help her gain access to the Garden. Once the portal is opened, Wynonna attempts to help Nicole get on her feet. However, Nicole’s leg is broken in three places. The only threshold she’s crossing is the one that leads into a hospital. Rachel vows to stay by Nicole’s side. We see a horde of salivating zombies outside banging on windows and doors. It’s all very The Walking Dead-esque. Wynonna jumps through the portal solo.
Now, Wynonna encounters her punctured doppelganger. However, when her back is turned, Eve manages to pull out the shears. Waverly finds her father’s throne again and very regally sits on it. All the regal. While in the BBD lab, Nicole asks Rachel where she hails from. This leads into a lovely tale regarding Rachel’s Mayan ancestry. Although Rachel is afraid they won’t make it out alive, Nicole is determined to keep breathing. As the door to the lab bursts open and zombies pour in, Nicole tosses a “beaver bomb” in their direction. Yes, everything is a sex joke. Just ask Wynonna.
Next, Doc encounters Wynonna. She eagerly greets him, but he’s under the impression that she’s really Eve. Thus, the two physically duke it out. What is it with Wynonna and her strange reunions? First Nicole, now Doc. After some squabbling and wrestling, Wynonna shouts out their safe word just as Doc is about to bite her. That’s something Eve wouldn’t know. Once Doc realizes Wynonna is the real deal, he pulls her up into a passionate smooch. It’s sizzling. But that’s par for the course when you watch Wynonna Earp.
Then, Wynonna finds Waverly on her stone throne, spouting nonsense about keeping Eve trapped in the Garden. We see that Eve is imprisoned once more when Waves takes her place on the throne. However, with some prodding and a gentle reminder of Waves’ fiancée in the form of Julian’s ring, our precious half angel gives up her throne. The Earp sisters reunite and it feels so good! Meanwhile, Eve and Doc are at it again — entangled in some good ol’ fashioned fisticuffs. He inadvertently kicks Eve through a door when it opens. Uh oh. She’s out.
Later, Waverly and Wynonna join Doc near the entrances. The trio struggles to find the right one, checking multiple doors before pinpointing the correct one. Wynonna notices that Waves drops the ring again. However, Waverly tosses Julian’s ring as far as she can. No more biblical jewelry! Finally, our group finds a set of doors slowly opening. They fall through them back to Earth.
Now, Wynonna wakes up near the stairs. She notices that Doc’s guns have returned. She wanders into Purgatory proper. Doc wakes up near the well, but thankfully not in it this time. He finds the book Waverly snatched on his person. We still don’t get a glimpse of the damn cover, though! Blast!
Meanwhile, Waverly wakes up by the Homestead. She’s about to hit the porch when a gun starts firing off bullets. She ducks for cover. We see Nicole barge onto the porch with her war face on. Once she spots Waverly though, the jig is up. She’s overcome with emotion as the pair embraces. And then it’s sexy time! Yes, WayHaught lovers, we’ve got a full-on steamy scene with our favorite couple! Back in town, Wynonna and Doc reunite. They notice a handful of men swinging from nooses. What the fork happened here?
Later, after sexy time, Nicole reiterates just how much she missed Waves. She’s still emotional about it. Nicole reveals that after the incident at the BBD building, she returned to the Homestead to recuperate from her injuries. She also tried to keep the Homestead safe for Waves and Wynonna. Then, Nicole reveals that Waverly, Wynonna, and Doc have been gone for 18 months, three weeks, and four days. What the what?
Holy guacamole, Earpers! Everything from Eve to the steamy WayHaught goodness to the time jump just obliterated what’s left of my mind. So far so good, as far as Season 4 is concerned. Frankly, it’s as if no time has passed at all. The actors are bringing their A-game. Additionally, the writing is pitch perfect. It’s a healthy mix between levity and tear-jerking drama.
Where is Jeremy and Robin? Will Eve continue to shapeshift while in Purgatory or will she obtain a new, consistent identity? Is Kate still alive? Join me next week as I recap Wynonna Earp, here on Geek Girl Authority.
