DISCLAIMER: This Wynonna Earp recap contains more spoilers than the number of times Jeremy has mistaken Craft Night for Thursday. Jeremy, we all know Craft Night exclusively belongs to Tuesday. You’ve been warned. Make your peace, and enter at your own peril.
Welcome back, Earpers! Wynonna Earp delivered a wallop of emotional catharsis this week. We bid farewell to Agent Xavier Dolls with a wake to celebrate his life. Purgatory received a mysterious visitor who happened to be one of Dolls’ Black Badge colleagues, intent on paying his respects to the fallen agent. Wynonna dove headfirst into bottle after bottle of whiskey, her go-to coping mechanism. Meanwhile, Nicole revealed her past as a survivor of a Cult of Bulshar massacre to Waverly. Doc did the horizontal tango with Kate. Overall, our performers brought their A game, particularly Melanie Scrofano, who I’m convinced couldn’t have a “bad acting day” if she tried.
Alright, ready to delve into “Colder Weather?” Just be sure to keep an abundance of tissues on hand. You’ll need them.
We open with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) drowning her heartbreak in whiskey, drunkenly trudging through the snow and yelling for Bulshar. She’s at her wit’s end, but more than ready to take on the demon who took Dolls away from her. Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) are stoking a fire nearby, listening to her inebriated verbal threats to an invisible Bulshar. They ponder over whether they should interfere, in case the demon actually reveals himself. While Bulshar doesn’t appear, a lone Revenant finds Wynonna and taunts her for her loss. Wynonna takes a tumble in the snow and brandishes Peacemaker. She struggles to hold it steadily, and is incapable of pulling the trigger. However, Waverly and Nicole run to her aid, with the former shooting the Revenant in the family jewels. Said Revenant, injured, flees the scene. Earp sisters will always have your back.
Next, a stripped down acoustic version of “Tell That Devil” by Jill Andrews plays in accordance with the opening credits. We see that Shamier Anderson is missing but Barrell has been quietly upgraded to series regular, so not all is somber and melancholic. Side note: someone please give me that acoustic theme song STAT.
Later, Doc (Tim Rozon) is chatting it up with Kate (Chantel Riley) at the bar. She desperately wants to meet our Purgatory heroes, but Doc lays down the law – his “Contessa” shall remain a secret. We also see that Kate has her tarot cards, and she urges Doc to let Wynonna go. Otherwise, he’ll always be “competing with a ghost.” Don’t even think about separating Doc and Wynonna, new girl.

Meanwhile, Waverly and Nicole are discussing casket options for Dolls. The pair are asked if they’ve pondered their respective eternal resting places. Nicole reveals that she essentially wants to be critter food for the wild animals of the forest, then what’s left of her will be catapulted into the woods. How very environmentally conscious of her. Waves wishes to be buried on the Earp family plot with her father, Willa and Wynonna. However, she discovers that Ward Earp only set aside room on the familial plot for Willa, Wynonna and his wife Michelle. This, of course, may have to do with Waverly not being a true Earp by blood.
Then, Wynonna barges in on the scene and refuses to discuss such matters. Waverly attempts to persuade her to the contrary, citing how important she was to Dolls, but our heroine retorts that death is forever. They’ll have all the time in the world to chat about coffins. Wynonna steps outside to channel her whiskey-soaked rage into shooting soup cans. Doc joins her, and Wynonna drops her tough girl act for a brief moment. They collapse into each other’s arms, comforting one another. They both lost a piece of themselves when Dolls left. Seriously, shower Scrofano and Rozon in all the accolades. These two deserve it.
Later, our gang is keeping warm inside the Homestead. Waverly feels that hosting a wake for Dolls may be inappropriate. However, Nicole and Doc believe that Dolls would want them to celebrate his life and to revel in happiness, regardless of how fleeting that happiness may be. Tensions rise between the group, and Doc storms out after smashing a glass against the wall. Wynonna sits in silence, staring into the flames of a roaring fire. The next topic of discussion involves heading to Dolls’ hotel room to find the late agent something suitable to wear. Nicole reveals that she has a key, and asserts their relationship was purely a professional one. Law enforcement officials having each other’s backs. The sentiment is most certainly a touching one.
Next, Doc arrives at his bar to discover a theft. Someone has made away with his banana liquor! Not to mention, that potentially same someone has stolen the Black Badge serums meant for Dolls. He ventures upstairs, gun brandished, and pinpoints the thief in question. A man named Ramon Quinn (Peter Mooney) claims he just stumbled off a bus and is in dire need of a drink, despite Doc’s declaration that the bar is closed for the day. We learn that Quinn is a former colleague of our Dolls, both working for Black Badge Division. Doc never wavers his gun wielding stance, and urges Quinn to show him proof of this connection. Never steal a man’s banana liquor, Quinn. That’s just common sense.
Meanwhile, Waverly and Nicole are rummaging through Dolls’ personal affects, which are scant to say the least. Dolls didn’t own much of anything. They discover an envelope addressed to Wynonna, for her to open after his death. Then, Nicole reveals the secret project her and Dolls were collaborating on – the Cult of Bulshar massacres. She also divulges her connection to Bulshar and how she survived one of the aforementioned massacres when she was little, one that claimed her aunt and uncle as victims. Waverly is taken aback, but ultimately willing to take up Dolls’ mantle in aiding her girlfriend in piecing together this puzzle. Log this in the books as another sickeningly sweet WayHaught moment, Earpers. I developed a cavity just watching this scene.

Later, Wynonna barges in on Jeremy (Varun Saranga), under the impression that he was cutting Dolls open to perform an autopsy. Wynonna urges him to stop, but Jeremy reveals that no autopsy is required. He knew how Dolls died. Black Badge’s experiments killed our good agent. Dolls knew he was dying. Wynonna is infuriated with Jeremy for withholding this information. However, Jeremy asserts that Dolls urged him to keep the latter’s impending demise a secret from their Purgatory family. Wynonna orders Jeremy to pack up his belongings and leave. She’s washing her hands of him. No, I don’t like seeing our group divided like this!

Next, Wynonna finds Quinn and Doc drinking their sorrows away at the bar. Quinn is bound by the wrists with string lights. Hey, sometimes you have to MacGuyver s**t when handcuffs or rope aren’t available. Wynonna learns that Dolls is one of the latest in a long line of Black Badge agents who perished after the extensive serum experiments. BBD was apparently hellbent in crafting the perfect super soldier to combat the forces of darkness. Just ask Steve Rogers – not everyone is meant to be a super soldier. However, the serum itself contains some sort of demon blood, which doesn’t sit well within a human body. Quinn is here to pay his respects to his friend Dolls. Wynonna allows him to stay for the wake, but after that she strongly urges him to steer clear of her town.
Then, just as Waverly and Nicole are leaving Dolls’ hotel room, a mystery figure snatches the former’s purse. You know, the one containing Dolls’ letter to Wynonna. Well, that escalated quickly. We see that, despite her quickness, the thief is Kate.

Meanwhile, Wynonna waltzes into the morgue to find Nedley (Greg Lawson) keeping watch over Dolls’ body. Even Nedley is aware that Purgatory is a town rife with supernatural wackiness, and anyone could decide to tamper with a former Lizard Man. Nedley’s good people, folks.
Next, the wake is underway at the bar with Dolls’ closest friends in attendance. Even Quinn is released so he can mingle with the group. Doc reveals to Waverly that he legitimately traveled to Hell when Dolls killed him during the Iron Witch’s curse. He also confessed that he told Dolls the agent would end up in Hell as well, since both men are cut from the same cloth. Doc is filled with remorse for his last words to Dolls. Waves divulges the theft incident, and that Doc may know the thief. As it turns out, he knows Kate very well. He embarks on a mission with Waverly to track down the vampire felon.
Then, Nicole finds Jeremy packing his things downstairs. Jeremy frantically reveals that the Black Badge serums have been snatched. We see a slew of Revenants testing the serums on themselves at a nearby bar. Of course, the demon blood infused with said serums sends the Revenants into a frenzy. They barge into Shorty’s, all hopped up on BBD juice and ready to end Wynonna once and for all. During a wake, of all things. Very disrespectful.
Meanwhile, Wynonna phones Doc, but Waverly answers his phone. She reveals that they’re running errands…in the middle of a wake. Wynonna insists it’s all hands on deck as a pack of Revenants just barged into the bar. We see Nicole and Quinn fighting them off as Wynonna loads her gun. Party time! After Waves ends her call with her sister, we see the duo heading toward the Gardner’s old home. Doc reveals that Kate is his wife. Yes, you read that correctly – she’s Mrs. Holliday. Everyone has a secret wife in Purgatory, apparently.
Upon entering Kate’s home, they discover the vampire has her tarot cards neatly in a row. Waverly snatches up her purse with the envelope nestled safely inside. Kate insists that she merely wanted an invitation into the group. Stealing property isn’t a way to gain new friends, Mrs. Holliday.
Back at Shorty’s, our gang is slaying jacked-up Revenants left and right. After the fight, Nicole and Wynonna have a chat about the latter’s emotional state. Nicole urges Wynonna to track down Jeremy and convince him to stay. He’s family. Thus, our Earp heroine makes her way to the police station. She discovers Jeremy is bound to a chair with a crazed Quinn looming above him. Quinn is releasing staples into Jeremy’s leg. The BBD agent reveals that Jeremy was one of the scientists who contributed to the twisted experiments. He must pay for his actions.

However, Jeremy asserts that he was simply following orders, as they all were. Wynonna tries to convince Quinn to stand down. She understands that the agent is haunted by the names of his dead colleagues, haunted by the fact that he made sure Dolls never left BBD. Wynonna confesses that the names of her past do torment her – her father Ward and her sister Willa, for starters. Finally, a grief-stricken Quinn hands over his weaponry to Wynonna and releases Jeremy from his bonds.
Later, we see Quinn boarding a bus out of Purgatory. Wynonna submits a thinly veiled threat to the agent, one that involves shoving the star tattoo on his hand up his hindquarters should he ever return to Purgatory. She hands over Dolls’ dog tags, insisting that the fallen agent be with his kin.
Next, we see our gang holding a proper funeral for Dolls. Wynonna buries his ashes on the hill facing the Homestead. The epitaph on his tombstone reads, “Agent Xavier Dolls, He Died With His Boots On.” That last bit was courtesy of Doc. Each member of our crew leaves a personal item of theirs inside the ground with Dolls. Wynonna decorates his tombstone with her necklace. You know, the one she was always losing and Dolls would, in turn, recover for her. No, I’m not crying – you are. Even Jeremy joins the ceremony, and Wynonna gratefully accepts him with open arms. All is forgiven. Yay!

Then, Waverly and Wynonna are sitting cozy round a blazing fire after nightfall. Waverly reveals that their father never purchased a plot for her next to the family. Wynonna makes an executive decision – screw being buried on some plot. She’s going to eternally rest on the Homestead with Waverly by her side. Once they defeat Bulshar, Wynonna is never letting Waverly out of her sight again. Sisters gotta stick together. God, I love this show.
Meanwhile, Doc pays Kate a late night visit. Kate reveals how elated she was when she discovered that Doc was still alive. She adds that Wyatt never stopped searched for his best friend. Of course, that kind of talk could only serve as a catalyst for one thing: a midnight delight. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Holliday engage in some inter-species horizontal tango. Just no biting, Kate.
