Greetings, friends, and welcome everyone to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers for WrestleMania XL.

For 40 years, WrestleMania has been entertaining us with some of the most impressive athletes in the world, and WrestleMania XL was no exception. There were plenty of high-flying stunts and over-the-top matches, including a nerve-wracking ladder match.

We even saw the return of some fan-favorite wrestlers we hadn’t seen in a while, like The Rock. The Undertaker made a very brief but chilling appearance, and it may have been my favorite bit of the entire weekend.

The overly dramatic storylines and epic fights never get old; take it from someone who has been watching for decades (we won’t say how many). If you are a wrestling fan like me and you didn’t get enough beatdowns this weekend, check out WWE Mayhem ’cause Stone Cold said so!

WWE Mayhem

Gameplay

WWE Mayhem is an arcade action game released in 2017 by Reliance Games. Play as over 250 WWE Superstars, including the brand-spanking-new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Cody Rhodes. If you are more of an old-school wrestling fan, play as legends such as Roddy Piper. There are champions from all eras of the WWE Universe.

Do you love the ladies of wrestling? Me too, kick some major butt as Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair or Bayley, the newest WWE Women’s Champion.

Compete in electrifying matches against every WWE opponent you can imagine. Quickly tap your opponent for a light attack and swipe across for a heavier attack. Tap and hold to execute a special attack. Of course, every wrestler has their unique hardcore move, like The Rock with The People’s Elbow.

You can also perform a sick reversal if your opponent lands a special. With each successful special move comes a cool cutscene, complete with hilarious commentary.

Game Modes and Events

There are plenty of game modes in WWE Mayhem to keep you busy. In story mode, complete storylines on the road to WrestleMania and eventually become the champion if you have what it takes. There are even premium live events that mirror what is currently happening in the WWE universe. For example, you can now play The Bloodline versus Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins storyline.

Alliance lets you battle with your friends and compete against other alliances. In this mode, you can earn hustle to purchase exclusive items. Or you can play against wrestling fans from all over in Versus. There are tons of different things to do in WWE Mayhem, though there are obstacles to certain play experiences.

Unfortunately, you often need specific Superstars for events, which limits your options, especially in the beginning. You will need to bulk up your collection before you can participate in every event. It is a slow grind to collect and level Superstars because you need money and XP items for each level.

Our Adventure Ends Here

WWE Mayhem is a fun mobile wrestling experience, but the game is a major cash trap. There are way too many types of currencies in this game—seven total. This makes grinding and getting specific items or currencies difficult.

It is obvious that the developers purposefully made leveling slow to force you into making purchases. Throughout the game, you are bombarded with micro-purchase ads.

The gameplay itself is action-packed and well-executed. I loved seeing all of the different wrestlers perform their special moves. The music and commentators complete the authentic WWE feel. I wish more focus were placed on the actual gameplay and less on ways to make you spend money. But if you are a die-hard wrestling fan and looking for something to play on your phone, WWE Mayhem will get the job done.
