The Batman and Mister Miracle writer just got a whole lot busier. According to Deadline, Tom King‘s penned dystopian TV series was picked up and is currently in development. While it hasn’t found a home just yet, the premise is interesting enough to get people’s attention. Even the title is intriguing. States of America.
The former CIA agent penned a story about a deeply divided United States. An “unprovoked act of war” arises that warrants foreign intervention and occupation. And given the name, we are no longer united. Deadline fleshes it out further elaborating that “combining the thrill and intrigue of speculative fiction with the modern fears and anxiety of the War on Terror, the series explores a world where the old, small differences that divide this country have become the war cries of new nations.” A very interesting plot, given today’s political climate in the United States.

King is a multiple Eisner Award-winning comic book writer for titles such as the current DC run on Batman and Mister Miracle, Marvel’s The Vision and Vertigo’s The Sheriff of Babylon. He also released a post-modern superhero graphic novel titled A Once Crowded Sky. So, the man knows how to write. Even if the fans dislike where his stories have gone. They’ve lashed out so badly that he needed to have a body guard at all times during San Diego Comic Con for death threats he received. Which is repulsive behavior. Hopefully with a topic as touchy as this series he’s penning, he won’t receive the same treatment.
We currently have no casting news or any news about where we’d be able to see the series but it sounds interesting. Admittedly, it doesn’t seem like my cup of tea. But for those who like alternate reality stories, this sounds perfect. I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for more information regarding this series.
