It seems safe to say, that unless Marvel counters with footage of Spider-Man in Civil War, DC Comics and Warner Bros. has definitely won this week’s news cycle.
Their CW special aired last night, giving us all sorts of new information about the Justice League, Wonder Woman, the Suicide Squad and the upcoming Green Lantern Corps. On top of all of that, this week sees the return of the CW’s hit series, Arrow and The Flash, as well as the premiere of the super anticipated Legends of Tomorrow.
It’s a GREAT week to be a DC fan!
Prominent among the reveals last night was what the DCEU is doing with the oft-overlooked and way overdue-for-a-film character, Wonder Woman. You can watch the video of them talking about her below.
We got LOTS of great new information about her, with DC Creative Director Geoff Johns saying, “What we want to do in the film is really tell people who she is, where she comes from and why she does what she does.”
He then goes on to describe a bit of the history and origin saying, “She comes from Greek Mythology. She was born on this island of Amazons called Themyscirca,” then adding, “These amazons were once created to protect man’s world and they’ve since abandoned it and Diana is asking constantly why don’t we go do what we were created to do and protect man and they say because ‘they’re not worth it,’ and this takes her on a journey to our world.”
Gal Gadot, who plays the Wonder Woman herself, Princess Diana of Themyscira, saying, “We’re going to see her coming of age — the entire history. What’s her mission?”
Finally, in the end, the film’s director, Patty Jenkins, tells us what we all love about Wonder Woman, mainly, “The greatest thing about Wonder Woman is how good and kind and loving she is, yet none of that negates any of her power.”
Geoff Johns echoes this sentiment, saying that she’s an “Amazon warrior. She’s the best fighter in the DC Universe. She has strength and speed and she’s been training her whole life for war,” then adding, “She stands for equality.”
