Today is Lucy Lawless Day! If we’re talking about Women In SciFi History we absolutely cannot leave out Ms. Lucy Lawless.

Not only is she a tall lady, and we here at Geek Girl Authority represent and admire tall ladies everywhere, she comes from sketch comedy, as do we, and has starred in many a favorite sci-fi show.

Lucy Lawless is the 5th of 6 kids in a large Irish Catholic family, and made her television debut in the sketch comedy show ‘Funny business’ after which she moved to Vancouver, BC, Canada to attend drama school at The William Davis Centre For Actors Study.

Soon after, in 1994, Lawless was cast in the pilot for Hercules, originally called Hercules And The Amazon Women as a character by the name of Lysia. She appeared in another episode ‘As Darkness Falls’ as the character Lyla. She was then asked to play Xena in an episode called ‘Warrior Princess’ after actress Vanessa Angel, who was originally cast, fell ill and couldn’t travel to New Zealand.

Obviously we know what happened next. Xena became such a  popular character that she got her own spin off Xena: Warrior Princess. The show was such a huge hit, it lasted for six seasons and shot Lucy into stardom.

It’s time for a Battlestar Galactica break. From 2005-2009 Lucy played reporter D’Anna Biers who turns out to be a Cylon, number Three. I don’t want to say I called that, but I called that!

A singer from the time she was a kid, Lucy Lawless has appeared in a number of musicals including Grease and Chicago.

Other favorite appearances include, Spartacus, Flight Of The Concords, Parks And Recreation, No Ordinary Family, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and will be in the upcoming Starz TV series Ash VS Evil Dead!
