With the release of Wolverine 3 only six months away it’s about time we finally get to see something from the film. Today we get a look at the teaser poster and finally the official title, Logan. Now, that title and the image in the poster (below) begs a host of questions to be answered. So let the wild speculation begin.
Let’s start with the title and go from there, Logan. My first thought, and probably the first thought of many comic book fans, is the title is a direct reference to Old Man Logan. Of course they won’t follow any of his storylines exactly because of the character separation between FOX and Marvel. But that doesn’t completely rule out anything, we’ve seen tons of storylines changed when taken to the big screen, sometimes for budget reasons, or time constraints, or that aforementioned pesky legal differentiation between mutant studios.
It’s also no secret Hugh Jackman can’t play the role of the glacially slow aging mutant. He is a human actor, after all, and he will keep aging. It’s also no secret Jackman is looking forward to hanging up the claws and stepping back from the brutal fitness regimen, so there is an end in sight. This is, reportedly, the last solo movie outing for our cigar smoking, swearing, lovable rageball.
To further that thought, Jackman has played Wolverine since the first X-Men movie way back in 2000. That will be over 16 years as the same character and he’s, somehow, managed to get more in shape with each successive film. We’ve seen every other actor replaced, except Jackman. It’s about time. As much as I hate to say it, as much as I feel another actor can’t strap on the claws and embody the Logan Wolverine, it’s time.
Which bring us to the next interesting point regarding the poster, the child’s hand. There has been a lot of talk and rumor surrounding X-23 lately, and if she will or will not appear on the big screen. For those that aren’t familiar, X-23 is a female Wolverine clone created by another secret program. In comic book timeline, she has now replaced Wolverine, donning his classic black and yellow costume and taking his name.
To me, all of this points to a passing of the torch and I desperately hope it’s X-23 and not some FOX created character. She is the only one that is a worthy successor to Wolverine, there is no other. We will know one way or another once trailers drop or, if they manage to not spoil the entire movie in the trailers, when the movie premiers in March.
Logan is scheduled to hit theaters March 3, 2017.
