According to Deadline, Will Smith is in talks to portray Genie in the live action Aladdin adaptation. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the live action is already set to make some big changes. And this casting could definitely be one of them. It’s currently set to be a musical as well so let’s break down these possibilities.

Genie was done superbly well by the late and wonderful Robin Williams for the 1992 Disney animated feature. Filled with fast talking, funny lines, silly impressions – the Genie truly made a mark on our hearts. Williams owned that character and brought him to life in a way that no one else can. That being said, with Smith possibly taking the mantle, I am extremely hesitant. While we know Smith has acting chops, he doesn’t have the range that could cover the character. It could and very well be a very different Genie than we’ve seen – but does that make him the Genie? It’s a question to debate. We can only hope he wouldn’t “Will Smith” up the role. He’s one of the few actors that struggles to not be a caricature of himself and don’t make me quote him from Suicide Squad to prove my point.

The live action is set to be a musical as well, very much like Disney’s latest live action film, Beauty and the Beast. We know Smith has had a successful musical career as well – but in talk-rapping. Thinking of the Genie talk-rapping is making me cringe already. We knew recently he was in talks with Tim Burton for a live action Dumbo, but the talks fell through. It looks like Aladdin may be his backup film. With the film starting filming in July, we’ll hopefully hear more about this in the coming days. As of right now, I’m not sold.

What do you think of Will Smith possibly being Genie? Are you rubbing a magic lamp to wish him out of the role? Let us know and be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Disney news. The untitled Aladdin film currently has no release date.
