Will Bryan Cranston Be the Next Star Trek Villain? And Will There Be Ladies?

Rumors are abounding that Bryan Cranston is in talks to play the big bad villain in the upcoming Star Trek 3 film. This news, in addition to Simon Pegg co-writing the new film, is great! Add that on top of the buzz that this new Star Trek film will add several three-dimensional female characters (one being the Federation President) is awesome. We need the latter desperately.

Uhura in the reboot films is a wonderfully realized character but that’s as far as it goes for the ladies. She’s unique among the other females in the two reboot films. And having only one well-rounded female in the franchise is not enough. And, more importantly, it’s not the tradition of Star Trek to have so few women present as they have had in the reboot films. I can only hope that these new female characters will be woven into the story as integral parts and not as set pieces.

If Cranston ends up doing this villain role, wonderful. He’s a fine actor, a bad-ass actor, if you will, and so intriguing to watch. I’m totally down with that! However, it would have been nice though, to consider a female villain when they were breaking the story. There are actresses out there with the gravity to play such roles and we’ve seen them in the Star Trek Universe before. Lursa and B’etor, anyone? Sela? Female Changeling? The Borg Queen? Come on! That’s just a handful. Here’s hoping for that outcome in Star Trek 4.

Anyway, crossing fingers for Cranston! And there’s your new hashtag: #CrossingFingersForCranston. You’re welcome!
