The first full trailer for the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Wicked was released today. We previously enjoyed a teaser trailer that gave us a feel for the movie’s aesthetics. However, the first official Wicked trailer unfurls more of the plot. It also gives us our first taste of the musical’s main event: the music, of course!
First Wicked Trailer
Naturally, the trailer most closely focuses on Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). As previously announced, Jon M. Chu‘s cinematic adaptation of Wicked will be split into two parts. For that reason, the majority of the action in the trailer is set during the Shiz University scenes. This also explains the significant glimpse the trailer affords of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). One thing about Yeoh: she can really play a morally ambiguous mentor figure.

In addition, the trailer also gives us more of The Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) as well as love interest Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). We also get to see a few shots of Dr. Dillamond (Peter Dinklage). Furthermore, we see more about the origins of Elphaba’s distinctive headgear.
And in terms of the music, we hear a few of the songs from part one. This includes a few lyrics from “Popular,” a scene-stealing number performed by Glinda. Plus, we get a few lyrics from “Defying Gravity,” Elphaba’s memorable ballad of self-actualization (and the show’s breakout hit song).
