In a Deadline article posted on Tuesday, January 20, 2023, it was announced that Wicked Part Two has been rescheduled. The second part of the Universal Pictures big-screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical still won’t arrive until 2025. However, the show’s legions of fans will have to wait one less month for the highly anticipated movie to arrive.

Wicked Part Two

Wicked Part One and Wicked Part Two are both directed by Jon M. Chu. Both star Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Elphaba’s best frenemy forever, Glinda.

Wicked is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. It reveals the untold history (and name) of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The basic premise of the novel and the musical are the same. Each follows the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda and the Oz-spanning consequences thereof. However, the execution of the plot in the musical is a significant departure from the source material.

The musical adaptation made its debut in San Francisco in 2003 before transferring to Broadway later that year. Both the Bay Area and Broadway debuts boasted Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda and Idina Menzel in the role of Elphaba. Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, the musical garnered international acclaim.

Wicked Part One will open on November 27, 2024 in theaters across the globe. Then, Wicked Part Two will now be released just shy of one year later, on November 26, 2025. Previously, the second part had been scheduled for release on Christmas 2025. And Trekkies take note: the movie will also feature Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, a role previously played (several times) onstage by fellow Star Trek actor Carol Kane.
