Kyle Buchanan, Senior Editor at Vulture Magazine, did an interview with Joss Whedon. However, there were some outtakes to that interview that didn’t make the main piece and one of them is a pretty good one. Though the Russo Brothers have taken over the directing responsibilities for the two Infinity War films, Whedon has a good idea of what they’ve been working on in terms of the script and story.
According to him,
“A lot of people were surprised that Thanos wasn’t the villains in Avengers 2, but he was never meant to be. He was always meant to be the puppet-master until he was done doing that, and then he’ll be the big villain they face off with. Not solely – I’m sure there’ll be plenty more [villains] in that monstrous epic, because one thing Marvel doesn’t do is string a story out into two movies that shouldn’t be two movies. They’ll give you two big movies. I feel like we got two movies into this one!”
Let the speculation begin! Loki seems like a safe choice, but maybe Thor: Ragnarok unleashes Surtur, the fire lord of Muspelheim. Maybe Ultron isn’t completely defeated and he comes back. Or maybe the Ultron sentience escapes to space and we get a cinematic incarnation of the Annihilation: Conquest storyline. Seems more likely that they’d bring in a new villain, or villains, though. Can you imagine if they did a Korvac storyline to precede the Thanos one? Or if Thanos sends Ego the Living Planet to Earth and the Avengers then have to fight, you know, an entire planet. Let’s see you fight that Ant-Man!
