What We Do In The Shadows is going to the polls. In “The Campaign,” The time has come for Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) to run for office while Nandor (Kayvan Novak) makes a new friend and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) reconnects with her roots.
Last week, neighbor Sean (Anthony Atamanuik) announced his campaign for Staten Island Comptroller. Nadja and Dolly swapping bodies. Colin Robinson eventually ended up in the same body as Dolly. Nandor went to space. And Laszlo (Matt Berry) discovered that Guillermo’s (Harvey Guillén) sweat allowed him to spend a lot of time in the sun.
First things first, Sean had to drop out of the Comptroller race. Apparently if you want to run for office, you can’t have more than nine DUIs. His opponent is Barbara Lazzaro (Marceline Hugot) and she is confident she will win. Barbara says Colin is nice, but he has no government experience. Colin Robinson couldn’t care less about winning, but the debate is like a smorgasbord for energy vampires. There is one thing he needs. Every good candidate has a good wife. He chooses his ex, emotional vampire Evie Russell (Vanessa Bayer) to be his wife.

Ever since Guillermo became part vampire, he’s been avoiding Nandor. Now Nandor is hanging out in the gym. He decides to search for a new familiar since Guillermo has abandoned him. Nandor meets Alexander (Robert Smigel) and invites him to the movies. Alexander is Jewish and Nandor starts using the Jewish language in his everyday conversations. Needless to say, Guillermo has noticed and is a bit jealous. Production interviews Andrew and he seems to like Nandor. He says Nandor seems lonely. The new friends go to the movies and Nandor tries to talk during the movie. Everyone around him shushes him, even Alexander.
Nadja recently reconnected with roots in the form of a family in Little Antipaxos. Now she wants to introduce Laszlo to her new family. Laszlo is a very charismatic vampire, so he’s not worried about impressing Nadja’s new family, but Antipaxans are very suspicious people. He shows up in a t-shirt and shorts and speaks to the family like they are stupid. The Antipaxans are put off immediately.
At the debate, Barbara’s platform is to eliminate paperwork by implementing more electronic processes in city operations. Basically she wants to eliminate bureaucracy. When Colin gets his turn to talk, he introduces Evie and talks about his two fake sons. His speech drains the room. Evie and Colin Robinson tell the crowd that she lost her job to a machine. And the machine ran over her foot, injuring her. She appeals to everyone’s softer side, saying machines can put her boys to bed or pay for her medical bills. Colin says the machine ruined their lives. Both vampires’ eyes begin to glow from all of the energy they are feeding on.

After the debate, Colin Robinson and Evie are kidnapped and put into a van. Production follows the van to a parking garage. One of the kidnappers tells production that they can follow, but won’t catch anything interesting happening. Colin Robinson and Evie are taken to a room with filing cabinets around the room and a circle of desks. There are people sitting at the desks who are also energy vampires. They are the Supreme Council of Energy Vampires.
For the next two longest minutes, the council barely says why Colin Robinson and Evie are there. Instead, one of the council people’s phones keeps going off. Another council person tries to tell them how to silence the phone. Another council person doesn’t know why he’s there. And another council person tries to talk, but isn’t loud enough. She continually tries to fix her microphone instead of speaking up.
The Supreme Council of Energy Vampires chairperson (Martha Kelly) informs Colin Robinson that he has to win the Comptroller seat. Barbara Lazzaro’s campaign threatens the lifeblood of energy vampires … bureaucracy. Colin Robinson is not interested in winning the seat. To convince him, the Council pulls up a powerpoint on an argument for statistical review. Colin Robinson agrees to win if they let him go before they start the powerpoint. They go ahead with the presentation anyway.

Nandor finds Guillermo talking on the phone and thinks he’s talking to Alexander. He gave Alexander Guillermo’s number because Nandor doesn’t have a cell phone. He gets very upset to find out that Alexander hasn’t called. Nandor thinks he and Alexander are too different to be friends. So in an effort to be more like Alexander, Nandor orders Guillermo to circumcise him. Guillermo is reluctant to do it and points out that he and his master are different too. But Nandor says only Guillermo is different and tells him to get to work.
Laszlo returns to Little Antipaxos to try to charm the family again. He brings a guitar this time and starts singing a song in Greek. Unfortunately, the song is the battle cry of a neighboring island, Nisida Mongonisi. The Nisida Mongonisans are the Antipaxan’s mortal enemies. So naturally the family hates Laszlo even more.
Colin Robinson logs into a video call to promote his campaign. He reveals to Evie that he really doesn’t want to win. He can pretend to be Mr. Charisma. Colin Robinson continues his zoom call and stands up, without any pants on. He tries to explain, but his explanation is almost as bad. Colin drops out of the race after exposing himself. Evie steps forward to shame Colin and to lie about how he treats her and the kids. She also announces her candidacy for Comptroller and she wins! Afterward, Evie tells Colin that they can’t see each other anymore.

Laszlo returns to Little Antipaxos to let everyone know that he doesn’t care what they think of him. He’s survived worse. His speech leads Yia-Yia Susan (Angeliki Giannakopoulos) to believe Laszlo is a lucky spirit, Vasiliás Pyuroni or the Kings of Pigs. The family accepts him, beliving he is a good luck.
Nandor waits for Alexander at the gym, but he’s being evasive. When Alexander finally shows up, Nandor runs after Alexander and into the locker room. Nandor shows Alexander his circumcision, but the foreskin grew back because of his vampire abilities. Alexander runs out of the gym. Later, Nandor and Guillermo go to the movies. Guillermo says there’s nothing like spending time with an old friend. Nandor yells at him to shut up and Guillermo smiles.
