Horror fans have a new game to get excited about. This one comes from developer Genius Slackers and publishers Katnappe and Sourena Game Studios. What Happened is an indie horror adventure that follows the story of a young boy named Stiles. He’s an American high school student who’s suffering from acute depression and anxiety. Players are given the task of guiding him through his troubled mind while dealing with the nightmares within.

What Happened is granting players a unique first-person perspective into Stiles’ battle with mental health. The player’s choices and the empathy they show to Stiles throughout the game can change the outcomes drastically. The game’s goal is to mirror the real-life behaviors and struggles of those who suffer from these mental health issues. Players will need to explore and solve puzzles to unlock the truth behind Stiles’ story.

Along with different environmental puzzles, players will guide Stiles through a mix of his real world and the world of his nightmares. The trailer and images shared with us so far show how drastic his world changes between the two. One moment a school hallway can look normal, and then it can change to a horrifying nightmare. Players will work to save Stiles from the dark forces that push him towards self-destruction.

What Happened will release on PC through Steam in July 2020 and on consoles later this year.

Genius Slackers shared that What Happened is not for everyone. The Steam page lists this disclaimer warning: This game may not be appropriate for all ages. The main character sometimes uses sharp objects to self-harm, takes drugs to enter illusionary realms, and depending on the player’s actions there may be a non-graphic depiction of suicide. There is violence and blood in cut-scenes and gameplay, including the use of sharp objects. There is strong language in dialogue and written text.
