WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN: May 30 – June 1, 2015
~Matt Reed
SAN ANDREAS took the top spot this weekend with an impressive $53.2 mil. Not counting the FURIOUS franchise, that’s the best opening for The Rock since THE MUMMY RETURNS earned $68.1 mil (not adjusted) in 2001. It’s been said in many a review that the movie only works because Johnson does all the heavy lifting, so its success is a big testament to his drawing power. Being an action film, however, much of its audience more than likely saw it this weekend so I’m not quite sure it will have the legs to be a blockbuster. With JURASSIC WORLD right around the corner, it’s going to have stiff competition.
PITCH PERFECT 2 remained in second place with an estimated $14.3 mil. That brings it’s domestic total to $147.5 mil. The movie has now more than doubled the take of the original on the domestic front and has nearly done that worldwide. The original grossed $115.3 mil total in 2012.
TOMORROWLAND tumbled from its disappointing opening last week. Its first three days only netted $33 mil. For a $190 mil franchise starter, that’s bad any way you slice it. It was so bad that it actually had an impact on Disney’s development of TRON 3. That film was cancelled because the studio didn’t want to take the risk of another disappointment. With TOMORROWLAND’s $13.8 mil, 58% week-to-week slide and a domestic gross of just $63.1 mil Disney will have to chalk this one up in the loss column and move on.
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD slid a spot to fourth. Although it appears to be losing steam on the domestic front, it’s picking up steam abroad. The film has now grossed an impressive $248.9 mil worldwide.
Cameron Crowe’s latest film, ALOHA, opened poorly. Earning just $10 mil, it’s on par with his recent films like WE BOUGHT A ZOO (2011) and ELIZABETHTOWN (2005) however I doubt it will reach ZOO’s $75.6 mil domestic haul.
Short Takes: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will cross $1.3 billion worldwide this week. Although it’s highly unlikely that the film makes the $1.5 billion the original did, it’s nothing short of a mega blockbuster. POLTERGEIST took the route of many a horror film in its second week, tumbling 65%. The poorly reviewed film has now grossed a modest $38.2 mil domestic.
Up Next: ENTOURAGE, the HBO series turned hopeful movie franchise, opens on Wednesday. The comedy SPY starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Jude Law and the horror film INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 3 open Friday.
