WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN: April 17-19, 2015

FURIOUS 7 is the gift that keeps on giving to Universal. #1 at the box office for three weeks straight, it passed the $1 billion mark worldwide this week. Its official total currently stands at a mindboggling $1,152,710,000. It has now grossed more in foreign receipts than FAST & FURIOUS 6 did worldwide ($858.3 mil vs $788.6 mil). To further put it into context, it sits at #7 all-time in worldwide box office with only AVATAR, TITANIC, THE AVENGERS, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2, FROZEN and IRON MAN 3 ahead of it. Simply put, it’s an international phenomenon. Anyone who says they predicted this level of success for the seventh film in a franchise is lying to you.

Despite horrendous reviews and a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2 was able to secure the second spot this week. Pulling in $24 mil against a $30 mil budget means that this film will be an earner. That said, it won’t repeat the surprise success of the original’s $146.3 mil domestic take back in 2009.

UNFRIENDED did good but not great business. Its $16 mil was enough to earn it a spot at #3. Considering its budget is more than likely slim, it should also be an earner. Horror films are notoriously frontloaded, however, so it has reached it’s ceiling and should ultimately close with $30-35 mil.

MONKEY BUSINESS opened with $4.7 mil. That’s identical to the opening of BEARS in 2014, a movie that closed with $18 mil. It’s worth noting that BUSINESS opened lower than Disney’s last documentary focused on monkeys; CHIMPANZEE (2012) opened with $10.6 mil and closed with $34.8 mil worldwide.

Up Next: Two films in wide release, both dramas, that will be swallowed up a week later by AVENGERS 2; THE AGE OF ADALINE starring Blake Lively, Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn, and the Christian film LITTLE BOY from producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.
