At the beginning of the summer, WEBTOON kicked off its Call to Action Contest. It allowed creators to show off their skills in the action genre by submitting their best fight sequences. They only needed to ensure it included 60 full-colored panels (in English) that introduced readers to their story and world and included one blood-pumping brawl between at least two characters. With over 3,700 entries, we have spent the last few months binging as many action series as possible!
But, the time has come, and WEBTOON has officially announced the Call to Action Contest winners. The grand prize winner is SCALE HUNTERS by Lucian Gallacane. The action-fantasy series is set deep within a strange forest where Thomas tries to make amends for his past by protecting the forest’s fairies, who are being hunted for their wish-granting wing scales. Gallacane will receive $50,000, a spot in WEBTOON Originals and a two-year Clip Studio Paint EX license. They will also get the chance to turn their series into an animated short.
The first runner-up is Cyartlee‘s Flagbearer and will receive a $30,000 prize; the second runner-up Midoryka‘s Code <grace> will receive $20,000. Both creators will get deals to become WEBTOON original series and a two-year license for Clip Studio Paint EX. We have no words for the idea that all three of these incredible series expand their worlds. And that is saying a lot, seeing as all we do is put words to our feelings. But there is just something about how these series bring to life the idea of the story, world-building, and downright gritty action.
And Scale Hunters, Flagbearer and Code <grace> are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. All of the entries for the Call to Action Contest have something special to enjoy. Vice President of Content, David S. Lee, shared just how happy everyone is about the turnout and the entries they received.
“We called on the next generation of incredible action storytellers, and were answered. These submissions introduced WEBTOON fans and our content teams to thousands of new heroes and villains. We set out to empower the creator of the next great action comic, and these submissions show that WEBTOON creators are some of the most exciting and innovative in comics.”
The entries for WEBTOON’s Call to Action Contest have been such a joy to binge over the last few months. We highly suggest checking out as many (if not all of them) as possible and checking out the additional content for your favorites. WEBTOON will be awarding additional rewards for the top 20 entries, including $5,000 to those who placed 4th through 10th place and a year of Clip Studio Paint EX license for all top 20 finalists and honorable mentions. A complete list of winners can be found here.
