This is a lot all at once but man is it good news. According to Variety, we now have the main cast of the HBO series based on Watchmen. Not only that, but in a 5 page open letter released on Instagram, showrunner and series producer Damon Lindelof announced that the story and the characters in the series will be new and original. Watchmen is taking off!

The production has cast Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard with King set to lead the series. A solid cast but unfortunately, we know nothing about their roles. Stated by Lindelof, “Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.” And that point leads us into the story news.

This will be an original story, set in the modern time. The original 12 volume story happened – but this takes place much later, in our present time. After Lindelof shared a section of his heart about his history and love of Watchmen, he told everyone, especially the fans, what his intention was with the show.

We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it.

He specified at just what angle they are going with. He stressed that this was going to be an original, modern story but further selling it, he clarified. “The Old Testament was specific to the Eighties of Reagan and Thatcher and Gorbachev…ours needs to resonate with the frequency of Trump and May and Putin and the horse he rides around on shirtless.” Which pains me to think we’ll be exploring a Trump world even in comics media. But! It’s the best method for Lindelof to go in. Not a sequel, not a reboot, just a story in the Watchmen world.

Lindelof’s letter is something I recommend people read. It’s an emotional rollercoaster at times but it’s a message to all the fans. It’s sad that he felt compelled to explain just how much of a fan he is and just how much the series means to him. But you can get a taste of what he’s going through. As he says though, it’s just the pilot, so we’ll see how this all goes!

Check out the letter and let us know what you think! Are you excited for the cast? Are you excited for the modern angle? Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Watchmen news. The series currently doesn’t have a release date.
