Is the Ridley Scott we know and love back with a space thriller?!? It sure looks like it based on this kickass trailer. The Martian looks like Science Fiction gold. The film, based on the Andy Weir’s book of the same name, is about what happens during one of Earth’s first mission’s to Mars:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

In addition to Ridley Scott helming the The Martian, the cast includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennieand and Donald Glover. That’s quite a cast.

The trailer for The Martian does give away a lot of the story and that’s always worrisome but I choose to be a believer in this one. This looks like a very promising sci-fi flick with all the proper components including exploration, disaster, survival and triumph of spirit. In the beginning you hear Matt Damon’s character, astronaut Mark Watney say, “Every human being has a basic instinct, to help each other out…,” then later we hear, “It’s space, it doesn’t cooperate” and finally, “In your face, Neil Armstrong!” There’s your story. Watney, who is a botanist and mechanical engineer, finds himself stranded on Mars. He’s scared but instead of caving in, he opts to “Science the shit out of this.” Now that’s human instinct for ya. I’m in!
