Disney has given us a few more glimpses into their next animated feature, Moana, with a brand new Olympic TV spot.
The more I see of this movie, the more excited I get. First and foremost, it’s not based on western fables or mythology, it’s based on a Pacific Islander legend, which is exciting on its own. Second, the two main characters, Moana and Maui, are not voiced by white actors which makes sense considering the characters are, well, not white. Third, Lin-Manuel Miranda has done a lot of musical work on the film. You can hear the music with his vocal throughout the trailer.
Lastly, despite the story being set thousands of years in the past, Moana is not a wilting flower. She’s her own person, very much in control of herself, at least, that’s the way it looks in the trailers and I hope this hold true for the movie. My one hope, can we maybe skip the romance angle this time? Not all heroines need to fall in love during the course of a movie. Luckily, it looks like we may actually be able to skip that part. Only time will tell.
Of course the movie looks gorgeous, so there is that and who can pass up the opportunity to see Dwayne Johnson voice a demigod. All in all, this movie looks amazing and I just can’t wait.
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
Moana sails into theaters November 12, 2016.
